Re: Today I received.....

Probably worth checking it's not got 2.5MB installed -- the STe mis-detected 2.5MB as 4MB and required a patch program to be run at boot up). There's some good RAM test software for the ST here: https://www.chzsoft.de/site/hardware/diverse-kleinigkeiten-fur-den-atari-st/#ram-test-software-yaart I k...

Re: My New BBC Master

Stunt Car Racer is amazing!! Any tips for getting rid of the pen on the case and other cleaning up of the scratches (below the pen, it looks like someone has attempted to scratch out a number or something)? Glad you're enjoying the game! :) For the pen, I was introduced to ' magic sponge ' by sbadg...

A strong candidate for retrobrite, if ever I saw one! Seems to have 4Mb installed though. :D

Re: Atari 2600

Best demos of recent years are Chiphead (a stunning demake of the seminal PC demo Ziphead), Bang! and aTaRSI. For 3D try Derivative 2600 although it's all faked using rasters of course, but still impressive. (Get ready for some seriously headache-inducing 2-channel TIA music.)

For anyone who would like to know more about how the Atari 2600 works, I can thoroughly recommend the book ‘Racing the Beam’ which has a great balance of technical details combined with insights into the creative culture of the day.

Re: Atari 2600

Coincidentally I just procured a copy of Pitfall 2 from a thrift store in the US. It is considered reasonably rare but as always there are carts to be had for a price (eBay the highest of course.) After cleaning the edge connector with IPA I can confirm the NTSC cart works in a PAL machine although ...

Re: Atari 2600

I’m with you on the Atari 2600, such an evocative machine. Not seen Xevious on it before - seriously impressive. There are some crazy demos made for the machine in recent times; I quite fancy having a good at writing one myself when I’ve finally run out of Beeb ideas. The hardware is so familiar yet...

For my Prince of Persia port, Jordan Mechner, the author of the original game posted the Apple II source to GitHub: https://github.com/jmechner/Prince-of-Persia-Apple-II with the following statement in the readme: As the author and copyright holder of this source code, I personally have no problem w...

Re: Hard disk installation of new games.

I installed Stunt car racer and it works very well with the exception of saving/loading. I presume the game is hard coded to use DFS? If not any ideas on how to get it to work? Prince of Persia doesn't want to work at all from HD. I know it's pushing the master all the way so maybe it's just not po...

Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master

Thanks for the feedback Sydney - let me know if you run into any definite problems.

One thing to note is that we did add audio volume support - press plus/minus on the Master keypad to turn the volume up/down. You can also silence the menu music with 'M' whilst on a selectable menu.

Hard to say. I don't think anyone ever used those PLOT codes, ever, in the history of the Beeb
 I love that PLOT 69 is 'plot point' - because there are 68 plot operations more important than plotting a single point to the screen. :)

Re: Starting a port of Stunt Car Racer...

Would it work on a B+ 128K? Sadly not as it (now) uses 65C02 instructions and the additional bits in the ACCCON registers for SHADOW & HAZEL RAM. I also understand that the additional 12K in the B+ 128 overlaps the SWRAM area at &8000, so cannot be used in the same way as HAZEL, which sits above at...

Re: Doom?

As amazing as the Spectrum version is from a technical point of view on Z80, I would posit it’s not actually Doom but a 2D raycasting engine with Doom-like sprites. If RobC can work his native ARM copro magic with SDLDoom that would be seriously impressive. Otherwise I’d suggest something more modes...

Re: Newbie 6502 assembly questions...

One thing you’ll quickly feel is how long-winded anything beyond 8-bit maths can be on the 6502. If you can afford the RAM then a precalculated lookup table is almost always going to be quicker & more convenient, particularly when separated into low and high byte tables not paired. Also to generalis...

Hi Ken - this sounds like an amazing expansion board, great work!

One question I have - how does the SHADOW RAM work; Is it possible to do 'Master style' double-buffering, i.e. have the CPU write to one memory bank whilst the CRTC 6845 video chip reads from the other?

Re: POLL: How much Sideways RAM?

So great to see everyone showing off about the size of their, err, RAM..! A much broader spread of values than I was expecting (I almost capped the poll at 64K - I'm glad I didn't.) So a conclusion might be that if requiring 16K (1x bank) of SWRAM is going to cover ~90% of the (active) Beeb populati...
