Spark FS and RPC Emu Starting from Scratch again!

Postby pixelblip » Wed Mar 14, 2018 2:44 pm

Hi
I've lost my RPC hard disk I built up. Doh! My SSD falied and had to be thrown away. Always back up your data children!
So I am starting from scratch. Not easy is it! Arrgh! Maybe I should get me a real Archie again :)

I went to download a telext editor for Archimedes today but I can't run it. I read about filetypes not carry across from windows - no software runs downloaded off the net from windows / copied into host fs.
I tried to install Spark FS as suggested and I tried to rename the Sperkfs file type ( to Basic ) but when I click on the (now blue) Spark FS icon to run it it just opens in !Edit. It's not thinking it's a program.

What the heck do I have to do to get Spark FS running so I can decompress this teletext editor please?

If someone has a basic RPC Emu hard drive image with Spark FS installed they could upload it would be most appreciated as I've spent all morning trying to get things working and my day(s) off are ebbing away fast! ( That is computers for you eh)
Thanks a lot

Sparkplug is the easiest way to bootstrap the system, once you have that you can open other zip files (including spark fs).

Hi Ian.
Thanks.
I saw that earlier but couldn't get going. Now I seem to be able to run Spark FS. Thanks a lot. Could have been me.

Jghartson.......I am trying to use your teletext editor on an Emulator. Is that something you have done please? I am getting an error trying to run it in RPC Emu..

Filing system or path Net: Not present.

Sorry if this thread is growing off topic but my aim was to take a look at this software :)

Thank you.

PS I think what it is is that it needs to run from a floppy and I've copied it to the hostfs hard drive file....is that not going to run if I do that? Thanks.

Looks like there is a hard-coded path in TtxtInit
teletext.PNG

Change it to something else.

ABZ Teletext Editor allows you to draw lines.
First, you need to select some graphics colours, otherwise whatever you do will be in text.
Ctrl-B will set the background colour for the whole screen, Ctrl-fn to select a Graphics colour,
Ctrl-C allows you to draw a Circle.
Ctrl-G changes to a Graphics cursor where you can draw lines, cursor moves, Shift-Cursor draws, Ctrl-Cursor erases.
Ctrl-E allows you to type Expanded characters (enter characters as 8x8 bitmaps).

Did you read the file called !README ? ;)
Before using, you should do the following:
Open the !Teletext application (Shift double-click) and load the TtxtInit
file into a text editor, eg !Edit.
...etc...

Thank you.
I hit a lot of barriers..........I couldn't read the Readme file at first properly in edit as it was all bunched up in a giant block in edit......and I don't know how to write paths in Risc os ( or even read them from a file like in windows / open location). I'll persevere. Just rusty.

That sounds like the Shift key is stuck on your keyboard! Double clicking on any file with Shift held down loads it into an editor rather than running it.

I don't know how to write paths

If you Shift-drag a file or directory into an editor window then it inserts the path into the text. Saves some typing :-)

General advice - use StrongEd or Zap rather than Edit, they're much better.

Total aside:
Every time I see this thread pop up, I suddenly think some brave soul is trying to recode SparkFS and RPCEmu in scratch.
