Risc OS 3.11 IDE disc rename problem

Postby rharper » Sat Jun 17, 2017 4:16 pm

My A5000 started giving errors when trying to run Edit, etc. :(
I have replaced the SD card interface with a new CF card (512Mb)+interface and run the Risc OS 3.11 version of HDinit.
This has automatically named the disc IDEDisc4.
I have copied across the backed up !Boot + required files.
The previous disc had a different name so the disk references in !Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks.!Boot are wrong.
The only live options for the disc are Dismount, Share & Free - Rename, etc. are greyed out! :(
I would prefer to rename the disc.
I have tried editing the items in !Boot to IDEDisc4 but it makes no difference, they don't run.
The configuration is unchanged from the previous working system.
Boot is set but changing the configuration to No Boot does not change the options for the disc.

Any ideas what is wrong here?
Also when booting it used to run Unplugtoolbox, it doesn't now.

Thanks,
Ray :)

I don't get it.
You didn't use the onboard controller and used a podule and managed to format with Acorn software ?
So it is a Castle podule you used ?
Maybe in that case you need to use the specific Castle tool to change the HD name ...
Have you checked on the excellent Chris' Acorn website now hosted by the CCH if this tool exists ?
IIRC none is provided with Castle IDE boards because it is supposed to be fully compatable with Acorn software ...
Strange.

I did use the onboard controller.
The CFcard interface connects just like a standard IDE drive.

No additional ROM fitted (next to the RO roms) which might contain a locker ?
Are you really sure you had a no boot and still it was greyed out ?
Could you try booting up the machine with DEL and then configure one IDE hard drive and check ?

Thanks for that suggestion.
I have booted + R to reset CMOS.
That has allowed the disc to be renamed.
I have dropped the saved configuration file on the configuration utility which restored most but not all of the configuration settings and it does not run !Boot although the configuration is set to Boot :!:

Mmmhhh could it be that you have the Icon virus and it stops executing the commands in your boot sequence at some point.
Open the folder and see if you have some sprites files named 'Icon'.
Use !VZap by Paul Vigay to remove these nasty programs.
And check on the disk where you have !HForm ...

I may have misunderstood, but have you run a *opt 4,3 (Think this is the right one!)

Great suggestion, it's *opt 4,2 for a RISC OS boot file. :)

Well done :!:
Booting OK now.
It's often something simple that's been forgotten. #-o
