Econet level 3 file server Manager's Guide

Postby Ottly » Wed Jan 28, 2015 12:18 pm

Hi All,

I believe there is a manual called "Econet level 3 file server Manager's Guide" however I can't seem to find a scanned in copy of it. Does anyone know of its existence and if its available?

Thanks, Scott.

Not seen that. If it exists it is one I should like too or a copy of it.

I've got it somewhere (paper version). I'll try and track it down.

I came across this when searching google the other day. Looks like Beebmaster has a copy, any chances you have a PDF version Beebmaster? :-)

A comment on the comment on that page:

"Just a quick word about *USERS. For a long time I thought that the version I had on my Level 3 File Server didn't work correctly, since it wasn't reporting all the logged-on users. Then I consulted the Level 3 Manager's Guide to learn that *USERS in that version does not list privileged users who are logged on.
Here on the FileStore a new version must be in use, because it is reporting privileged users. Natually all my aliases (should that be alii?) are all privileged!"

If you are logged on as a system user, then the network call that *USERS uses does list system users. The described situation above of not listing non-system users only happens if you yourself are also a non-system user.

I can't seem to find a scanned copy anywhere, and the original has been in storage box 29 since July 2010.

There are quite a few books that I have that probably aren't available electronically, and we do have one of those sheet feeder scanners at work. If there was a way of undoing Acorn wire binding without ruining it then I'd be willing to do some scanning. I don't want to spoil the binding and I haven't got the time to stand there and do it page by page.

You need a binder machine which can pull the wire apart, then you can take the pages out, scan them, then re-insert them...

They look like this: http://www.the-binding-warehouse.com/renz-srw-360

You might have one where you work? I think we have one in our stationary cupboard here....

We have something similar, but it's only for the floppy plastic comb bindings, not the wire ones.

Some do both (assuming it's a wire comb and not a wire spiral)?

I've been today and retrieved the Econet Level 3 File Server Manager's Guide, and the Econet Level 3 File Server Installation Guide (which is a photocopy), which I've been searching the net for years and not found, only to realise I had it myself all along!

I'll get them scanned as soon as I can.

Hi,

Just checking in to see if this has been scanned in yet? I'm still keen to see it.

Thanks, Scott.

Hi.

No I don't believe it's been scanned in as yet.
Maybe one day someone will do it. :-)

It all came out a bit massive so I have put a PDF here:
http://www.beebmaster.co.uk/Downloads/E ... 0Guide.pdf

and reduced size TIFFs here:
http://www.beebmaster.co.uk/Downloads/E ... 20Guide.7z

I can upload the original size TIFFs if anyone wants them, but they are 516MB zipped down to 78MB.

Thanks so much for this Beebmaster. You've made my day.

You mentioned in an earlier post you also had a copy of the installation guide. Would it be to much to ask to get that scanned in too?

I refer my Hon. Friend to the reply I gave some moments ago...

I tried it last night on the other feeder scanner, thinking it would be quicker as it is already an A4 copy, but it ate it like every document I've ever fed into it, and by then it was past my bedtime so I had to give it up.

About half way there now with the flatbed...

Thanks again so much for scanning these in Beebmaster. I know how much of a battle the scanner can be.

I hope they are some use. I remember when I first turned them up that I was a bit disappointed that they didn't tell us the secrets about how the L3 RTC dongle works. I think it has been subsequently discovered by dismantlery.

Yes I was surprised and how little detail there was in the installation guide. Looks like they had pretty much automated the whole disk initialisation process and they don't really mention it or go into any great depth at all.

I also think it was a mistake to not display privledged users when doing a *USERS. If someone had hacked a privledged users password and was logged on as that privledged user. You'd have no way of seeing them logged onto the server.

Fair enough to not display then for non privledged users performing a *USERS. But a privledged user should be able to see everyone who's logged onto the server.

Thank you so much for this. I have just bought some FileStores and this is extremely handy.

If there is any way I could get the full size TIFFs that would be great.
