Maybe it's in with some of the unboxed tapes... If I don't have to spend more than 10-20 mins looking for it, I'll see what I can do.

Hi,
Can anyone help with any of the following games for the BBC/Electron please?
Adventure - J.A. McHugh - 1993 Found! Thanks Aran.
Micro Puzzle - From "Weird Computer Games" Usborne - 1984
Rendezvous - From "Computer Spy Games" Usborne - 1984 Found! Thanks Aran.
Starship Adventure - A&B Computing Coverdisk Sept/Oct 1983
Vesposian Affair - Originally for the Dragon32 From "Computer & Video Games Yearbook 1984" - Ported to BBC by Steve Wills

I could have sworn I had some of these... :?

If it's any consolation, I've sorted Rendezvous for you and will hopefully get Micro Puzzle done tomorrow.

Re: Missing Adventure games

Postby Dave_E » Mon Feb 06, 2017 11:25 am

I've said this before on here but back in the day (about 2002) Topologika was still going and was publishing games for the Archimedes. I found their web site on the Internet and I wrote to ask them if they had any Acorn Electron disk adventures still for sale. I got lucky because the owner said they did have the original inlays, packaging, etc but unfortunately they didn't have the duplication equipment BUT if I was happy to accept the master discs, copy them and send them back, he would pop 'em in the mail recorded delivery. That's where all the Acorn Electron Topologika discs on the Acorn Electron World came from.

Spy Snatcher was one of the discs he sent and I asked him about this game. He told me that "it was actually released for the Electron but we sold zero units of it". So I have the ONLY copy of this game in existence but my copy is the Electron one.

I suspect that therefore there is one BBC Model B master disc "somewhere" in Topologika's archives with the original Spy Snatcher code. But unless someone else contacted Topologika asked for Beeb versions and got the same guy and did the same deal, there won't be a Beeb Spy Snatcher to discover any other way.

Not that it really matters. I'm sure that the Acorn Electron version can easily be tweaked to run on the BBC anyway.

yeah, thanks Dave, I do remember that story.
I think there are a few on that list that may be about as difficult to find as Spysnatcher

What about Castaway? did you get chance to get to the other end of the country? :D [-o<

** Also - I added a couple to the list 2 minutes after your last post - have another look!

Could someone have a quick look at fixing "Dungeon Adventure" from A&B computing please?

http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=2085

It seems to play OK, but it is the SAVE/LOAD that isn't working properly.
If you type "SAVE" and enter a filename, the file gets saved OK, but if you type LOAD to load a savegame in, the game crashes.
It is in BASIC, and the problem is around line 2145.
I think it should be a quick fix for someone.....

Thank you in advance,

Lee.

I haven't tried it, but it looks like the load routine is looking for more than what was saved. I say just remove line 2145.

Or try adding

Code: Select all

2005 PRINT #F, header$,startmess%,max%

Actually, that may be the better option.

I just checked the original Adventurescape listing in A&B Computing July 1985 and there is no line 2145.

Thanks boys.
Dave do you have a link to the magazine listing please?
Unfortunately there is a GOTO 2145 in the listing.
I wonder when this got messed about with?
If anyone has an unmolested copy, please let me know.

Thanks,

Lee.

I just have a paper copy, and I could scan this tomorrow if it would help.

There are electronic copies on the AcornElectronWorld DVD, but I don't have these.

So a quick fix would be:
2145 REM bug

No they're not, the A&B scans were sold on other DVD's, that I don't have.

I say change GOTO 2145 to GOTO 2150.

Just replace 2145 with a REM statement?

All of the lines xxx5 are not in the listing I have. I think these are likely fixes from the original author. It was published in A&B computing in July 1985, yet the REM statement at the start of your version indicates modifications in November 1985.

That's exactly what appears in the version of $.ADVRUNF in STH's copy of Adventurescape:

(I don't know where STH's copy came from, but it seems to be a copy of the official A&B Adventurescape disc, and seems to include some of the data files for Dungeon Adventure.)

Listings for an updated version of Adventurescape were published in the May 1986 issue of A&B Computing magazine. There was also an accompanying disc you could send off for.

That issue of the mag does contain line 2145 but claims that lines "1900 - 2070" are "as original", which is starting to look like an error now because I think line 2005 should be as you suggested above, Dave.

:?:

UPDATE: Courtesy of Arcadian, here's a photo of a page from the September 1986 issue of A&B Computing that seems to confirm the existence and content of line 2005:

UPDATE 2: the Adventurescape manual has been found:

I've just read the review of Hezarin in the November 1990 issue of the Micro User and found it came with the Last Days of Doom.
As the Last Days of Doom is available as a download I just wondered why Hezarin isn't ? Reading the review it sounds like a big miss.....

The Elk version is available though, so it's not *too* traumatizing. The BBC version is likely exactly the same except runs in Mode 7!

I downloaded the zip file but couldn't find Hezarin on either ssd disc. Probably there somewhere so will have another look tomorrow.

As Topologika are still going as an educational software provider, has anyone contacted them to see if they have any old stock as there are other missing games of theirs as well?
