Fixing Hunchy!

Postby leenew » Tue Dec 23, 2014 11:57 am

Hi there,
The game Hunchy on Michael Brown's disc collection Disc 069 is faulty.
If you miss the bell at the end of the screen then hunchy can walk through walls.
(Play it, you will see what I mean...).
This needs fixing.

I have found the original source for the game.
It was "Your Computer" March 1985.

Here is the listing:
YourComputer850300065.jpg

YourComputer850300067.jpg

YourComputer850300068.jpg

And here is Mick's program:
HUNCHY.zip
(5.52 KiB) Downloaded 56 times

Also, at some point, Mick mentioned the game was running too fast, and he "altered the machine code" to slow it down.
Well, reading the article, the listing was for the Electron, and needed 2 variables altering on line 20 to slow it down for the beeb.

Armed with all these facts, can anyone make a good version? :D

Thanks,

Lee.

Hi Lee,
ref Hunchy!
The slowing down routine has already been sorted by me, although the correct disc may not have been re-archieved.

To slow the game down, change the figure at line 740 in hunchy2 in the .delay routine. LDY#180 to a higher figure such as 250.

To slow down the speed of the fall when killed, change the figure at line 970 in hunchy2 in the .delay2 routine. LDY#150 to a higher figure such as 250.

As for the walls fault, some careful reading and checking will need doing. The best way for this is for one person to read the text from the mag whilst another reads/checks against the code from the game otherwise I can see it taking a long long time unless something very simple and obvious pops up!

regards,
and happy xmas

Mick.

is there no better copy of the listing. i have found a few typo errors. but sometimes the listing can not be read.

if there are errors in the m/c code you get strange things :x

Hi All,
happy xmas!

Good news!!!
Spent all day reading through the code and found several errors in the version on my disc.
I have made all the changes and the game now works.

firstly, changed the code at lines 20 and 1420 to make SP(1) and SP(2) 180 to start and then 160 later to speed the game up as per instructions.

secondly, changed the code at lines 740 and 970 in .delay and .delay2 to LDY#200 after running the original in ElectrEm to get as close to the correct speed as possible.

Also changed some wrong code at line 110 (?&D4A to ?&D54) to make the bonus score print on the screen instead of the random code.

lastly, to stop walking off the right of the screen the code at line 660 should be LDA&74 and not LDA&72.

regards,
Mick.

Hi duikkie,

did you find any other errors other than the ones I found?

if there are more, then Hunchy will require further work.
I only checked for the bits I needed to make the game work as it should.

regards,
Mick.

Taken a look through the printout, but cannot make out some of the code (8s, Bs and Ds) look too close.

Is it possible that we could have a bigger and better scan of the pages so I can check properly that the code in the game matches the code on the pages.

regards,
Mick.

That was the best scan I could find. If anyone has the original magazine (Your Computer March 1985) maybe we can do better?

Another one bites the dust ... I've been keeping half-an-eye out for this appearing on eBay - didn't twig that it was a magazine listing.
