Holed Out needed SWR? :?
ISTR the original disks copied/rebuilt the different 18 holes each time, loading from one large file and saving to 18 smaller files.

^Holed Out, usually asks if you want to use SWRAM.
but can tell it no, so loads each hole after finished previous hole

Oops!
Will double check all the Holed outs!!!

<EDIT> checked holed outs.
They do not work properly which is probably why I got confused :^o

On a slightly different tack...
*cough* *cough*

I was wondering about the validity of setting up some kind of 'slush' fund whereby any interested parties could contribute 50p or a quid or whatever for the purchase of WANTED games from eBay?
When the game is cracked / imaged we can sell it back and top the fund up again.
I was thinking it would need to be hosted by someone with cracking skills.
The reason is that although I am willing to buy / sell on ebay, I can't crack, so would need to post stuff everywhere which would make it expensive.

Any thoughts??

Any interested parties say AYE.

AYE!

I've sent you a PM.

Definitely interested, but would suggest we call it "preservation" rather than cracking, and I'm a little bit uncomfortable about the idea of copying something and then selling it back.

It might also be advantageous to keep the purchased tape/disc in case in future there's a new format or a better way of scanning or whatever - and it would be advantageous to our community to still have the original. But that means they have to be stored somewhere, and I think there's a few of us here with already too-cluttered abodes!

There really aren't many BBC/Electron game tapes that come up on eBay which I don't already have - so before anybody goes spending crazy money on any 'wanted' title(s), make sure you post [somewhere] on STH beforehand, yeah? As I may be able to help! =)

I no longer have the time or inclination to dump stuff myself, but Colin McD has volunteered to dump tapes if required.

Also, well before I uploaded Fraser's first batch of HQ.UEF files to acornpreservation.org - there were a good number of UEF files that had to be discarded, as apparently they'd been created without provision for 'phase shifts' (as we simply weren't aware of phase wotsits when the HQ.UEF specification was first being devised).

Anyway, I should still have all these 'sub standard' HQ.UEF files lying around somewhere, and though I wouldn't want them releasing "into the wild" ... I'd be happy to send selected/requested files to either Michael and/or Bill Carr, so they can be hacked/converted to 'complete' disc images (provided I have them, of course!).

Right, off to try and locate whichever CD, DVD or USB drive I archived them to ~8 years ago ... !

the .CSW's would be 2x better! & .WAV's 8x better!! (if stereo, so can mix left/right channel and sideA/B). I've noticed a couple on the acornpreservation.org site ain't working (the ones now working 120% in my CSW thread \:D/ ), like tonight i tried 'The Complete BBC' tape 7pack, to get the files out of "Complete BBC, The (Audiogenic) (B) (Tape) [tape-2] [side-1]" for Zelda meets the bugeyes, but files are knackered after file3 :-s , same with BugeyesII :-s

tried all my usual tricks with the .CSW file, but :(

PS B-Em22 is better at handling .CSW files properly (streaming on Firebird, Revs), BeebEm414 80% working.

Should have the CSW's too, I think.

Fraid acornpreservation.org should be considered dead and won't be updated.

However, all content is safe (including the lossless, higher res 600dpi versions of all scans) and the intention is still to incorporate everything into Samwise's eventual StarDot archive/repository.

Zelda Meets the bugeyes: this has the same control problem whereby your character (Zelda?) just walks to the right with no input from the keyboard making it difficult to control.

Eh? Where was this? As I said, that image worked on my Beeb and also plays fine in BeebEm :?
Although, I do recall once having this issue with (I think) Lode Runner and Jet Boat on one emulator...

Do pixels come in any other variety than "small"? :P
I cannot imagine there was any corruption in the files themselves, so this was either present in the original game, or has resulted from the way I had to move things around in memory to get it to work.

HOLED OUT does not work properly

Got my own tape-ripped copies of Raid and Shark, and I also have a working (straight disc transfer of) Holed Out + extra courses(? from PIAS 19), if anybody wants 'em.

And yes, the dog is meant to bounce all the time :)

on SHANGHAI WARRIORS, it is the original with the dot above his head (same as my original tape) so its just Players not playing the game properly before releasing it (what do you expect for £1.99  ) and Subway Vigilante was £2.99 so the extra £1 was for testing :-k lol

the dot is ok if at top of screen, as he is in the dark black sky, its when you move him down to the white ground, you see that bug (2 bugs found so far! [-( )

Hi Cybershark,
I accept the small pixel :D is part of the original game...
As for Bug eyes, every version I have with the white space suit man moves to the right with no keyboard input.
That is on MY beeb :standard 32K, DFS 1.20, internal datacentre set to DTRAP all disk commands (page is at &1700 which is a bit better than the &1900 for standard DFS)
I have a red suited man (Zelda meets the...) which plays OK though.
I have the original tape on order so hopefully I can put this one to bed :D

Wow!

many thanks Lee for testing my disks.
(Don't forget the several demo disks I have published as well as these may have alternative versions of games that actually work on a real BBC as many of these came from my original disks).

I will take a proper look at all these faults.
The graphics curruption on Winter Wonderland and Alien from Outer Space is caused by altering the code to work on Beebem. Un-altered versions were issued as b-em disks which should work on a real BBC.

Correcting faults will take some time as I have to find a working version on a real BBC then copy it to Beebem, check all its content and file names against all copies and amend where needed and then check to make sure it works on both Beebem, b-em and a real BBC.

One thing I cannot check, but it may be worth someone else doing is finding out if any of the faults on a real BBC are due to the Data Centre being fitted as all my old games worked fine on a BBC B with just Disc Doctor and Exmon II fited BITD with Acorn 1.20 DFS but my new BBC has the Data Centre and 1770 DFS.
Some chips can and did interfer with games. It may be even worth starting a seperate list of what games get affected by what chips and what problems they cause!

regards,
Mick.

Hi Mick,
Yep, your comments are noted.
I am just tidying up the excel list at the minute, but I plan to re-check all the 'errors', also check with the B-Em versions, then I will copy the problems to disk and pull the datacentre out and try again!!

Good luck trying to sort 'em all out :D
It will be worth it in the end (probably for our kids, and their kids  )

Tidied the list up somewhat
change the file extension from .zip to .xls

BBC Disc And Tapes.zip

Try sorting by genre and see how many text adventures we have! or Space Invader games...

Sort by Title / Publisher, this highlights which titles we have on cassette but not on disk.

I don't know how well I have captured 'Genre' information?? but I suppose it's better than nowt.
Also, the 'Platform' section, detailing which platforms (B, B+Elk, or just Elk, or B + Master) has been largely ignored.

The next job is to Re-check all the errors I discovered in the STH collection, and in Michael Brown's collection to verify them, and then check them EITHER from disk with the datacentre pulled out OR from datacentre with the DFS pulled out??
I am not sure which is the best option, but I will probably try from datacentre first as it is easier.
On This matter, is it sufficient for me just to remove the DFS 1.20 ROM? or do I have to pull out the 8271 and the logic chips too?? I would rather pull out the ROM only but if this will give me 'issues' then I will rip the lot out.

After that, I will import Pernod's disks to the list. ** I get 60 disks Pernod - not including the music / animation / adult / utility stuff, or the single title disks**

For the most part, it is the ROM only, as it is the disk operating system implanting itself in the parts of the RAM that causes problems for games designed for a tape only Beeb.

I don't see the need to remove any of the logic chips. Game code may write direct to the 8271, but this is only likely in a game written to use a disk system. Cassette based games are going to ignore the 8271.

Other causes of problems are the OS version and of course copy protection systems.

I'm sure an expert will be along shortly...

You are too modest :D

Got 2 'fixes' to remove from the list 8)
Mick Brown said that 'Alien From Outta Space' and 'Winter Wonderland' were altered to work on Beebem but I have checked the unaltered versions on Mick's B-Em version Disks and they are just fine :D so that's another 2 down...

n.b. MICK, just noticed that FIRETRACK on disk 034: the B-Em disk is release 1.02 and on the Beebem disk is release 1.00. Any Reason?
I always want the latest 30 year old releases

Hi Lee,

The original un-altered release of FireTrack should be on the B-em disk image.

I changed the release number on the BeebEm disk because I had altered the code to correct a mode 7 graphics glitch with the loader with BeebEm where the screen went to one side in BBC B mode.

The Plan is to insert the correct version on the disk once the author of BeebEm issues a fix.

PS have you tried all the titles on the Alternative disks yet.
Sadly I have been too busy to do anything this week and it may be mid-March now before I can get anything done as I am away in a couple of weeks.

Mick.

Hi Mick,
As far as I can see, the only B-Em disks are 08, 025, 027, 034, 046, and 049.
From those, the only problems we had were from 046 and 049, Alien from outta space and winter wonderland, which I have marked as fixed.
Correct me if I am wrong :D

Oh, and I have got plenty to be getting on with until March :D

Hi,
After testing all the STH 143 disks, and Michael Brown’s 104 disks plus the 6 DEMO disks, and tidying up the excel list, I thought I would double check all the errors and problems.
I am glad I did as I am able to clear a lot of the ‘problems’ away :D
It is amazing what a power-cycle can do.
It seems that a few of these errors were caused by the Beeb simply being full of garbage, and a quick power-cycle and re-load sorted them out.

Other games that have disappeared from the list for reasons of ‘ASKS FOR PASWORD’ or ‘NOT WORKING PROPERLY’ have been checked and found that the password is needed (given in a previous part of the game) or me discovering how to play a game properly  etc.
All games that needed a joystick that weren’t tested before have now been tested. 8)

So: here is an updated list of the problems we have in the archive.

** Once again, the games were tested on a standard BBC Model B, with a DFS 1.20 fitted (8271) and one of Retroclinic’s internal Datacentres. *DTRAP was set unless otherwise stated, which intercepts any DISK calls. (Page is at &1700) **

I have categorized the faults or problems into different types.
The first category is SWRam being required which means I cannot test the game at the moment.
I may be confused here, as some may use SWR as an option but do not need it to be able to run, so if anyone can clear these up it would be appreciated.

S.W.R. REQUIRED

Disk 4D2, and Disk MB077: program UIM
Disk MB027, and Disk MI3: program DOCTOR WHO AND THE MINES OF TERROR
Disk MB060: program DUNJUNZ
Disk MB068: program EXIZ (works but graphics corruption on title screen)

If anyone wants to try any or ALL of these 80 odd (ONLY 80 odd :D =D> ) games that have problems, and post their results, it would be appreciated!!
If anyone has problems with the STH disks or MB’s disks that I do not mention then please post those as well.

I am going to do a bit more tidying of the list then I shall start on PERNOD'S 60 game disks.....

If anyone wants a complete set of the most up to date versions of MICK BROWN'S 90 game disks, 10 adventure disks, 4 newer disks (101 to 104) and the 6 B-Em versions, is there anywhere I can post them?? as they are a bit tricky to find all the right versions by trawling through all the posts.
I don't want to post them here again as it is over 18MB zipped and we may 'hit the wall' again like we did a couple of months ago.

Thanks.
Lee.

TOO FAST

Disk SU1, and Disk MB038: program SYNCRON is ridiculously fast.
Disk TY1: program WETZONE (ELK) is also ridiculously fast.

Syncron is supposed to be fast, quote from Gary Partis the author 'designed Syncron as an exercise in pure speed rather than playability'.
Wet Zone is fast because you're running the Electron version on a Beeb.

Hi Mr. P :D
OK then I shall remove these.
I understand the quote from Gary regarding the speed. (It is ridiculous), but I would have thought that to release a game commercially it would have been better to put a TOP SPEED setting and a PLAYABLE SPEED setting??
As for the ELK game, are we going to remove it from the BEEB archive? fix it for speed for the BEEB?
It seems odd just having one or two ELK games in the BEEB archive.
Again, do we go down the route of slowing it down??

Cheers.

OH! almost forgot!
Do you have any sort of list of your games disks to save me a bit of typing??
Disk Number or title / game title / publisher would be great :D

Ta.
