Gimpo running speed

Postby Michael Brown » Sat Dec 24, 2011 12:24 pm

A&B issued a pac-man style game back in the mid 80s called Gimpo written by Kenton Price.

The game seems to run very fast on BBC and is very difficult to play as a result.

Does anyone know if it written for the Electron only or is it supposed to be that fast on a BBC?

I suspect, if you're playing the version from 8BS, that it is the Electron version. The A&B magazine had an article (if I remember correctly) that described how to slow it down for the BBC Micro. But as I was completely Electron-focussed (in those days) I just created the Electron version.

I can have a look at the A&B issue to see what commands you need tonight though.

Hi Dave,
If you can find the code for slowing it down, that would be great.
Alternatively, is there is a BBC version out there that anyone has?

regards,
Mick.

Just checked the Acorn Electron World DVD and the A&B issue 3.11 copy is also fast.
I take it that this is because it is Acorn Electron World and therefore the Electron version also.

Mick.

Added a bit of code to slow the game down.
Tested this version again the original on ElectrEm and I think this is as close as I could adjust it.

GIMPO.zip
(4.24 KiB) Downloaded 68 times

created a bit of code that is moved to location &140 which slows the game down.
The code is originally stored at location &3B80.
changing variables &38 and &96 will change the speed.

Jump routines added at locations &27B7 and &27C3 (before downloading) will jump to the new code and slow the game down.

Enjoy!
Mick.

I have managed to get a html version of this article together (finally - it's been on my To Do List for several years).

According to the accompanying article, the changes reduce the flicker as well as being the official mods for slowing the game down:

Here is a link to the info:
