Lee

In the last spreadsheet you sent me there were a couple of extra images mentioned. Disc110-HowzatTD42P.ssd and Disc110-Timerun.ssd, which I haven't got. Also should I upload the Lords of Time image you referred to in Mick Browns thread, or does it need more work?

I would upload LoT yes.
I will re-do the latest discs as soon as I get a moment Paul as there have been one or two changes.
001 to 109 should be finished ( barring any errors) and I will send you a new 110 and possibly 111 and 9 alternative/pre-release software discs.
Lee.
**ps* there are some errors with years.
Set the search to only show new (post 2000) software and some games show with years from the 80s and 90s.

I think all errors came from the spreadsheet, which as you say was done quite quickly. Am I correct in thinking they should be commercial?

Here are the dodgy dates:

Code: Select all

SELECT id, title, publisher, year FROM `games` where year < 2000 and reltype = 'N' ;

574   System Wadgebury (Disc Edit) (STD)   Andrew Cook   1987
1200   Sorcerer's Domain (+ Editor) (STD)   AMF-Soft   1990
1212   Exiz (+RAM)   AMF-Soft   1989
1237   Omegas   AMF-Soft   1989
1260   Zedon (+RAM)   AMF-Soft   1989
1358   Infection   AMF-Soft   1989
1419   Sorcerer's Domain II (+ Editor) (STD)   AMF-Soft   1991
1982   LazerChess (STD)   Andre Sihera   1990

Hi Paul,
Yeah, nnot sure what happened there!
If you sort the spreadsheet by publisher, all of theose are together, so maybe were clicked in error.

I really want Arcadian to be the final word on release status as he is a proper font of knowledge here.
(feel free to correct him afterwards though!!)

The trouble is he is being quiet at the minute.
I sent an email with some requests for updates to release status on the new discs, but no replies as yet.
He is a busy man.

I would change them all to commercial release for now, but be prepared to have to alter a couple soon!

Thanks,

Lee.

OK, I have uploaded Lords of Time so it works, and changed the release types as identified.

Thanks for the disc images. Can you supply me with "Split out" versions so I can do one per game and it loads in jsbeeb etc?

No rush - I have plenty to keep me going.

I also added a favicon. I was trying to think of a BBC Micro related thing that has not been used (much). I went for the stick person on the front of the user guide. Now I can find the tabs in firefox!

I just downloaded a copy from the website and it is the same as the one in the email, so I think it is correct.

Are you sure you are not seeing a cached version (Try another web browser if you have one available)? If so, can you let me know some text I should see in the correct one that isn't in the wrong one (Or vice versa?)

Thanks

Thanks for the spreadsheet Lee

Updated in the database are:

Space Invaders - name changed to Space Invaders (Pro Software)
Mastermind (R.H. Compendium) - publisher name changed to R. H. Software.
Poc-Man - name changed to Poc-Man (Classic Arcade Games) (V1.0)
Data fleshed out for
    Empire
    Fishing
    Invaders (Ganymede)
    Zark
Games added to database:
    Balloons
    Fireman (Games Compendium 1)
    Shuttle (Molimrex)
    Startrek (Games Pack 1)

I have not touched the author field yet. I expect I should create a new table for authors and link it to the game using a link table like I do for secondary genres. I will continue working on search first unless people want to see the author.

I'm working (slowly, as usual!) with Lee (he's going a lot faster!) on getting the authors in the "master" spreadsheet, and I can produce the SQL for this to help getting it loaded.

So bit of thinking aloud.

author table for author, I think you/we will need a game_author table to join games to authors, because you can have multiple authors. So it won't work having fk_author_id in the game table, it needs a separate table. (Or given that only one or two authors, could have fk_author_id_1 and fk_author_id_2 ... but then you'll discover a game with three authors and so on!)

e.g. F14 Tomcat has authors Adam Polanski & David Pyta; Scrabble has D. Lakshman & Dr P. J. Turcan.

Given the data, probably not worth having author_title (e.g. Dr.), author_first_names, author_surname and so on? Just author_id & author_name?

[EDIT: oh, an also aliases e.g. Orlando? Do we want/need those? Don't think there's an issue, just asking in case it makes light bulbs go off.]

Building the game_author table will be "fun" given that game names aren't consistent, and some titles e.g. "Reversi" have been released by multiple publishers. But one step at a time!

Ultimately it will be good to have an author search "find all games by Peter Scott" but let's get the data first, eh.

Just a thought . . . you may have this covered(?), anyhow (as I'm not fully aware of the intricacies of the project) - but, could you allocate a 'serial' number to each game thereby individualising them - removing the problem with common game names and making it easier to add the Authors!

Brilliant - Thanks Richard. I'll keep on the search then.

Yes, if you click on a game you will see its number in the url.

I thought it was a problem due to same titles - should have known you had it covered

The "fun" comes when you have (completely made up examples!) Reversi (Acornsoft) ID 99, Reversi (Micro Power) ID 201, Reversi (Superior) ID 403.

How do you know the Reversi author Fred should be linked to 99, 201 or 403? Well, the answer is you have to look at the publisher as well. But if the publisher can be "Acornsoft" or "Acornsoft Limited" or "PCW" or "P.C.W." etc. then not as simple. And sometimes game titles are "Super-game" or "SuperGame" or "Super game" etc. so the titles aren't always easily matchable.

So can do a lot of automated matching, but (as with making the spreadsheet) there will need to be manual tidying up to get 100% done.

Before we get to that stage I'm going to tidy up the spreadsheet authors etc. as much as possible (don't want to add "A. Smith" and "A Smith") to reduce duplicates and make the matching of author to game as simple as possible.

I've only seen a couple of games so far with three authors.

Some games have a "team" name e.g. "Art Crew" so I'm leaving those blank for now.

Importing the spreadsheet is a little fiddly, but will have to be done. Regarding publishers, I denormalised the data a little by having the name and an ID in the games table. This means that some publishers with different names have the same ID. Alternative is a good example of this.

Edit: I mean Alternative Triple Decker 09, and Alternative Triple Decker 10 are both by the same publisher, so having the publisher name in the games table in addition to the ID allowed me to reflect this. Maybe there should be another column for this information, but I have plenty to do before worrying about that!

An export of the database is available in github:

Thanks; just finished the initial load of the authors column into the spreadsheet, so will attempt some tidying up before making an author table.

Then I'll look at linking authors to the games as best I can - hopefully can get 90% automated and then a manual tidy-up after that.

Would like to get an admin section going, but every time I volunteer to do anything it just makes things go slower [-X

I was thinking that maybe we should indicate what percentage of software there is on the site so that people visiting don't think that they have seen it all.
Maybe just a note saying that the site is under active development and to come back to see more stuff.

Latest version looks good, Paul. Could remind me exactly what the latest changes are?

(Question: should the banner at the top left of the menu bar -- "Complete BBC Games Archive" -- be made clickable so that when you click it it "resets" the site and takes you back to the initial URL bbcmicro.co.uk? Currently, when you hover over it, it highlights, and it looks like it should be clickable, but it isn't!)

On the about page I added the status section as suggested by Tricky, the screenshot was updated as I noted, but the main change was search. You may remember there used to be three search boxes, and now there is just one. I think it is much friendlier than before.

Basically, at the moment, bbcmicro.co.uk is simply Mick's collection.
The other games just need checking and adding to the site.
I am just thinking of the best way to go about it..
