Re: High Score Challenge S8 - R9 - Bug Eyes

Postby Michael Brown » Fri Dec 29, 2017 7:39 am

Just taken a look at my copy of Bug Eyes.

I take full blame for this.
In BUG5 Bill had changed the value of &1F14 from &F8 to &A8 and &1F35 from &F9 to &A9 to avoid a clash with the Datacentre.
However, because I wanted to keep the stars in the loader moving the same as the tape version does whilst loading the main game, I had to add some code to BUG5 to stop them before starting the game. The way I did this broke the game. I have now moved this routine to a spare bit of memory at &3110 in BUG4.
I have checked the game and although I cannot complete it, it does still go to "GAME OVER" when dead and restarts.
Also it retains the highest score and only makes a noise at GAME OVER when a new high score is achieved.
Hopefully, this sorts the issue.

Is it possible someone could download the image here and play the game through and let me know the outcome?
If OK then I will copy this over to my Disc012.
Many thanks.
MICK.

BTW Another good reason to play games is to check they actually work correctly when copied to disc.

This is one of the few games that we had to alter to make it compatible with the datacentre.
See here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6178&p=59797&hilit=Bug+eyes+datacentre#p58567
Maybe Billcarr could have another look at this?

Lee.

I also noticed that that version didn't update the high score correctly. It took whatever game you just played and made that the high score. Something more to think about..

See my previous post.
Just edited it and inserted a new version of the game.

If someone can please try this one.
Hopefully, this time, I have got it right!

^if it works with original tape, AND the STH disc convert version, maybe the DataCentre fix just knackers everything else,
so pointless just for folk with a DataCentre, as more %people will have Tape /Disc / 33p MMC interface :D

noticed this version is called 'Agent Starman'
& when I first played BITD from compilation "The Complete BBC -Audiogenic"
it is 'Agent Zelda'
tape rip linky below, wonder if that's OK too, ie goes round again after level10 :-k
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=5023#p66848
EDIT: it does work, even with my bad tape to disc hack from 1986 :D
as have them saved in 'The Savestate thread!' 8)
ZeldaEnd10 then 01again.jpg
scr Zelda

EDIT2: inst from both:

OK!
Just to see if it is the Datacentre fix that causes the problem.
Here is the same copy of Bug Eyes with the original code for the keys.

If someone could please check this copy and let me know the outcome.

regards,
Mick.

That's Odd!

OK the only other thing it could be is that there is a ?&3C7=&00 in the loader of the STH version.
I have added it to my version.

Hopefully this sorts it. If so then it was a tape protection thing after all!
If not, then I may have to wait for Bill C to investigate.

Nope, that's borked too.

Looking at the debugger in B-em, it ends up at address &B58, which contains &32 HLT which according to this crashes the 6502.

Hi Jools

I will take a look again in the new year and start a new thread to avoid clogging up this thread!
Happy new year.

I hear you on that one Matt but it is only 10 levels so I guess he started it off hard to make sure there is a challenge and brother is there ever.....

That bit's a bit of a pig, but if you do the first bit of the level fast enough, it becomes easy.

Got to that level, the third time around.

New high score, starting to get the hang of Level 2 now, but "'Yikes' doesn't seem as easy to cross those platforms as they do on Vindaloo. maybe it's just me !

Was having a good run until I kept getting stuck on the elevator on "WOT NO ALIENS" could not move right for some reason

I also find Yikes! to be more tricky than the other levels after it, and the spiders on Dominic Is a Wally still catch me unawares as the collision detection seems a bit off.

Finally solved 1 - 10 levels, got to level 2 on the 2nd time around. Got flustered or otherwise I'd still be going but still nowhere near what Jools got.... I must be terribly inefficient in this game I guess, probably haven't chosen the best solutions but the ones I've got seem to work anyway. 87,600

Thanks for the pointer, I can do this level pretty much every time now, just don't stop hardly, and just go for it at the start. I thought Yikes would be pretty straight forward as it is a carbon copy of a Vindaloo level but it's a lot harder, the platforms seem to behave differently.

Very slight increase, I have now sussed Level 2 out and can do that easily every time now, level 3 never been a problem, but Yikes is still getting me every time !

I found Yikes to be really hard and sometimes it still gets me, hell, it gets me lots but it's just a timing issue and there are patterns that work every time, it's just a matter to see them. I started using counting along with those patterns and get through far more often now.
