I was sure I was good at this when I was a kid.

It's absolutely nuts fast. I don't remember it being this fast when I was a young 35.

Oh dear, my memories of playing this game during school lunch breaks and being good at it have been grossly exaggerated. This can't be the right play speed 8-[

The only play option appears to be... destroy as many as possible during the fly in phase, hope for a double up beam to hit you, try to hold on to the double ship by madly shooting at anything that's not a star, then... I made it to level 8, can't recall if level 10 gives a reprieve like the arcade version or even if I ever made it that far :-k

The graphics on BeebEm tear quite a lot, it's a bit smoother playing directly on the bbcmicro site using jsbeeb but not much.

Can anyone who can play on a real beeb see if the graphics and speed are the same?

Score: 30900

It's the same on real hardware. There were several different 'clones' of Zalaga that were slower and made more logical sense in that they allowed you to be able to forecast your play for a better score. This version has some of that capability but the program is smart enough to just block you in when you might least expect it or when you think 'I got away with it' moments.

It's really well written, super smooth but a bit too fast in my opinion.

Wow. I really quite enjoyed that!
It is too fast that is for sure but I think the main problem is the sprites are too big which leaves too little room to maneuver.

My only tip so far seems to be the opposite of FourthStones and that is to keep out of the way of enemy fire as they fly in at the start and take out the stationary enemies at the top of the screen on the opposite side of the flying enemies. Also - just don't get hit!

I remember playing this in Iceland. One of the years we were there, the country went on strike. I was a computer operator shift leader at the time. Because the police and hospital were connected into the computer system we had to have one person on the shift and that was the shift leader, me....

I used to take my Beeb into work, set it up on a tv that was there and play many games, program some ASM and sometimes BASIC. We were not allowed to do any actual work unless the Police or Hospital had a need or if the systems crashed and only once we contacted our supervisor.

I played Zalaga quite a bit and remember some of these screens though I think I played them differently in those days.....66 today, 35 then.....yup, usually a different way of thinking. I like the game but it should be a bit slower for strategy.

I believe I was "In the Zone"

Held on to double ship until level 8, got past level 10 which is easy again but after that it goes back to crazy hard. Not sure if I can repeat it but I'll have a few more goes [-o<

This is a change of pace following Estra...

More practice needed with the double ship - whenever I collect it I always seem to lose both straight away... My best so far: 45,200

Had another turn tonight but struggled to get into the groove, highest was just shy of 60k. I quit now if I don't get double ship on first level and keep it until level 8. Almost getting used to dodging ships and bullets but it's so fast it's easy to lose concentration momentarily... splat!

There's a bonus for getting perfect on the bonus levels which can really boost your score early on, tricky to get though and all about precision ship position and good timing while shooting.

Some games the ship is just in the right position to obliterate everything as it comes out, others it seems to miss everything moving... I tend to quit early on those games.

Maybe tomorrow [-o<

Slight improvement, made it to level 13 and didn't get perfect on any of the bonus levels... next time maybe.

Completely different game and play style but kind of reminds me of the approach to Hunchback where concentration and luck needs to combine absolutely perfectly to get to the higher levels.

A bit of an improvement - still not going to trouble the high scorers on this one, though.

Once I'm 'in the zone' it feels quite easy. It's all a matter of getting your start position right and keeping out of the way of enemy fire. I'm pretty certain I'll do much better than this especially as I'm going to give it a real good go next Saturday at the Cambridge meet!

Actually a bit hard on my PC - I'm using an older version of Beebem without keyboard mapping so caps lock / control is a little bit weird on a PC keyboard. :-({|=

BeebEm is the one for you Richard. It's easy to map the keys in that. That's what I did because I found my CTL key isn't functioning correctly on my hardware. It's the second key I'll have to replace in a week. I finally replaced the Z key and it now works flawlessly..... wish I'd known before hand, would have replace the CTL key too..... oh well.

Don't let that kid get to you Richard, I'm sure you'll make her day if you don't get a better score..... but the rock will be your permanent hiding place should that happen - no preasure.

Nope, that's the one I use but the version I have to use doesn't have keyboard mapping.

But you did make me think of using b-em, which I can map A/S to instead of Caps Lock/Ctrl, so I'll have a go on that.

It uses some undocumented 6502 instructions - so make sure you allow those in your Beebem settings.
