I'm really liking this game, apart from being rubbish at it ;)

Thanks FS. Here we would call that a grand slam for baseball or a hat trick for hockey (that's the one I prefer).

I kind of got into a rhythm that allowed me to just keep going. I had 2 lives still at 30k so knew I had a chance to get further so I guess it's up to you and Sydney now...... over to you.

Not enough to knock off the top dog but might be enough for second (for now!). I was lost in deep concentration when I heard the extra life chime at 30k.

Definitely got the competitive juices flowing with a high score to aim for :P

My first entry in one of the tournaments, having recently got a BBC up and running.

This game is hard!

Don't think I'll be troubling the leaders too much with my efforts on this one. Can we play Banana Man again instead? :-)

This is the sort of game I feel as if I ought to be better at than I am. Ultimately, however, I suspect the ascribing of the fire function to Tab, a key on my left hand (my weaker, slower hand), is just hindering me that significant fraction.

It's long been a game I've enjoyed despite my limitations at it, though. Smooth, swirling aliens, graphics which have more of a feel of an early arcade shooter than most, and some very satisfying sound effects. Along with Pinball Arcade, one of Kansas City Systems' two best titles from an admittedly very uneven roster of games.

So, yes, a score. Game played on an original Beeb as usual, for the good it did :-D

9,525.

So close... so very close...

I'm at the stage where if I don't get to 10k without losing a life I rage quit and start again. Also I try to aim for about 5k per level for at least the first few levels as a guide of how well the game is going.

Found time for another go of this. Not bothering the top scorers, though...

Not a bad little game this one. Smooth, bit of variety in the alien patterns and the different alien weapons.

Have eaten too much Easter chocolate and that has had an effect on my cat-like reflexes.

We have a winner of Hunchback oops, Galactic Firebird Sydney who has won this round in a very close race to the finish ..... Way to go Sir Syd...I think it's only fitting that the winner of this competition should be someone that knew Gary. We didn't all have that privilege.... Sydney went the extra mile for your remembrance Gary Forest

Nothing if not variable in the quality of their published output, and curiously keen on plugging their exciting new titles in magazine adverts with biro drawings of screen shots instead of with photos, Kansas City Systems (actually rather more prosaically based in Chesterfield as opposed to the American Midwest) proved at least twice that even a blind rabbit can find a carrot sometimes - once with their very pleasing Pinball Arcade pinball construction kit, and once with Galactic Firebird.

Mike Chalk's gallery shooter is deliriously, pleasingly devoid of etiquette. Garishly coloured to enhance the impression of playing some battered old coin-op circa 1981, and with the sort of loud, stabby sound effect for killing the eponymous firebirds which could easily have graced one of David J Hoskins' contemporaneous shooters (Hellforce, Proteans, etc.), the smooth, swirling aliens, vanishing ghosts and raining bombs follow little if any discernible pattern. Everything happens at once, right from the get-go, and in quantity. That the gameplay doesn't develop a jot as time passes doesn't actually matter - it's terrific fun simply trying to hold on.

Graphics - 6
Sound - 7
Gameplay - 8
OVERALL - 7
