I expect to beat this score by a fair bit after some more practice.

Totally new (old) game to me this one, never even heard of it, same author as Nightmare Maze/Astro Plumber by the looks of it. Nice little game, good fun to play, first score of 38210, but best score so far 55190.

Ah, that's Ethel the Cat, MRM's semi-official mascot.

Her full name is actually Ethel The Cat Goes Quantity Surveying, in a partial nod to the book Ethel The Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying that features in the bookshop sketch on Monty Python's Contractual Obligation album.

She was the creation of Banana Man's cat-obsessed author Mike Goldberg, later one half of the team behind the OmniPuss art studio and pot cat shop based until a few years ago on Lincoln's main thoroughfare Steep Hill. OmniPuss was purported to be owned and run by a moggy named Betty Shopcat :-)

The instructions of the game suggest you're attacking Ethel rather than eating her, but either way moving over a square with her on it does always cause a spider to appear.

Delighted this game came out of the hat, by the way - a real, genuine longstanding favourite of mine. Pressure on to rack up a decent score now, though :-)

Right, then. A trio of goes this evening on my original hardware/software wrought the following.

70,780 my best so far. GAME ON.

It feels a bit "written in BASIC", and it's annoying when the game places a spider down on a square a millisecond before you step on it. And the boxing-in on later levels is a bit random.

Weirdly fun in a strange kind of way, though.

This is one of those games I've always overlooked... and the HSC gives me an excuse to play. The difficulty level seems to stay too easy for too long, and then suddenly you just get randomly boxed in. It's a strange one! Best so far: 40,340.

New high score, my best so far, this is a really good game, but the way you keep geting boxed in is really frustrating, don't think I can better this score now.

Score: 66070

Finally got to have a go at this fantastically frustrating game, slightly sticky controls make it all the more hair pulling at times but overall a good game idea and gameplay, will have a few more goes too see how lucky I can get, and here's my game play tips:

* Get as many cats and bananas in the earlier levels to build a good score base, the bonus score is pretty rubbish below at low levels too
* Always make use of the shuffle even if you don't need it, it can help reduce the amount of blue squares

The only thing I wish the author had done in this game was write machine code for the I/O in this game so that the herky-jerkyiness of input would disappear. If that had been done properly, this would be such an awesome game. As it is, I'd say it's a bit above average for playability, above average for frustration and way above average for game idea.

Stone me, how close a contest is this!!!

With Sydney's latest score I make that six players covered by little more than 2,500 points.

I didn't think I had any further time to play this before next Monday due to work commitments, but I think I need to find some now... :-D
