Stardot high score challenge
Season Six: Round Ten
Tetris chosen by Sydney

RULES
Round One starts at 9pm on Monday the 6th of February and ends at 9pm on Monday the 20th of February
The aim is to score as many points as possible

The instructions are included in all the games as far as I'm aware but I'll post them anyway. Also, please honour the start time in the name of fairness. Let me know how you like it. Points will be awarded using the following formula.
points = (YS / BS * 50) + ((NOP - YP + 1) * (50 / NOP))
YS = Your Score
BS = Best Score
NOP = Number of Players

I think you've got the wrong game Ed!
I wanted Tetris - this game is Tetriz.

I think you've got the wrong game Ed!
I wanted Tetris - this game is Tetriz.

Actually happy about this played a few games of Tetriz and couldn't get over how laggy it is, feels like a type in basic game.

Haha! Funny I also played some games of Tetriz. On the title screen it says "The Russian mega-hit". A bit of an odd choice I thought, but I suspected nothing. You really got me Ed (probably unintentionally)

What can I say Tom? My wife chooses the games from a bowl, however, it might be noted that she didn't choose a single one of mine for this round. There must be some kind of message there somewhere.

Today's effort: EDIT: 3302

This game is pretty tough, rotating doesn't always return the shape to the same position horizontally and the keyboard layout is sometimes confusing when things speed up. I try to move my finger away from the drop key 'Z' so I don't panic press it but then I slam the space bar to drop which has the same effect of messing things up. Good old fashion twitchy game

I'm really pleased I nominated this! I wasn't sure if I'd played the beeb (elk) version before or if I was getting confused with the C64 version. It seems I had played it before but it's very similar to the C64 version. This was released before the gameboy version, which is my favourite, and it is subtly different in the controls and very different visually. I wonder how a mode 4 version would look, maybe even a mode 0 version. Maybe after I've finished my Combat project......

Anyway - new high score: 4498

Everything seems to be going smoothly then you press drop instead of rotate and it's panic stations!

Just a little request - could everyone try to grab the 'GAME OVER' screen like mine above as it shows the stats for that game which make it a bit more interesting.

Completely gutted to have missed the deadline date for Arcadians, for reasons that will become apparent when I update that thread in a second. Botheration, sod and toss!

No matter - I've not had many games in this season which I'm all that good at, but Tetris is perhaps something of an exception. Tonight's efforts so far have netted the following scores (game played on a real Beeb as usual):

I could spend hours on this game. I might just yet!

Not going to have too much time for this one, sadly.

Classic game, not sure I like the controls, though. Space as the "drop" key would have been better. And the scoring system doesn't give you much in the way of points for clearing multiple lines at once (but it seems to like you dropping the pieces from a great height).

At least there's no infinite spin on this version!

Ok guys, you have an interloper....

I don't play computer games at all, I'm absolute rubbish at them all in fact. However, back in the eighties, Tetris significantly and uniquely caught my attention and I'd even confess to becoming a little obsessed with it. So much so, I wrote a BASIC/Assembler (68000 ) hybrid version for the Atari ST called Red Square (Mono and Colour versions) and a magazine, ST User perhaps?, offered me a few quid for it but I decided in the end to push it into the PD arena instead. The upshot of this is that Tetris is the one game that interests me and that I still play on many devices but I didn't know there was a decent Beeb version so this caught my eye and tonight I've played a few games under BeebEm. Hopefully I'll get chance to improve on tonight's efforts.....

Best score so far, not played this incarnation of Tetris since it was originally released, not a bad version overall, although I have that Tetris tune in my head the whole time playing it !

Some more goes, it always takes a few games to get warmed up. I missed catching the end-game screenshot of my highest tonight so I had to do it all again and nearly repeated the score. It's horrendously fast at the end, one bad mistake and you just avalanche to failure, not sure I can do much better without a lucky run of pieces when top gear kicks in......

Much better improvement, but it doesn't half speed up and get a bit chaotic, think thats as good as i'll get now.

Does anyone have a clue about the scoring system used by the game? I'm finding I'm getting better scores by clearing lines asap and keeping as close to the bottom of the screen as possible.

In the version I wrote for the ST, that would be true because apart from a nominal score per piece settled, there was also a per-piece multiplier for the distance dropped. This 'automatically' rewards nimble dexterity and quick thinking because the drop distance is obviously decreasing inexorably with time for each piece. Particularly rewarding wiped rows was a little perverse since that is the whole point of the game and is a basic expectation whereas quick dropping to erase rows is the clear skill discriminator. Mine did also score higher per piece if preview is switched off since use of this feature does makes things easier. I'm pretty sure I studied the original incarnations of the game to determine this 'authentic' behaviour.
