Amstrad Mega PC / PC7386sx

Postby Prime » Mon Dec 14, 2015 9:10 am

Hi all,

Does anyone happen to have the technical manual for the Amstrad Mega PC? The PC component of this system is also known as the PC7386SX so if someone had the Technical manual for that, it would also be helpful.

I'm trying to repair a couple for Arcadian, both seem to have had battery leaks, I've only worked on one so far, and the corrosion was quite bad, I've cleaned this up and repaired the two damaged power tracks. I've also replaced the floppy and IDE connectors and cleaned up beneath them.

However I'm still unable to boot of either a floppy disk or an IDE hard disk. I suspect that there may also be track dammage somewhere, having the schematic would make this much easier to track down.

Cheers.

Phill.

Did you try link #4 in the 'References' section from here, bottom of the page ?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_Mega_PC

You could contact the Center For Computing History too :
http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/ ... ce-Manual/

The Amstrads sold very well in France and there's still a very active community.

You could search this forum with keywords or register and ask for help.

Yeah I found that, but unfortunately the link seems to be dead :(

That is for a different model, but I know Jason who runs the CFCH, so I may try dropping him ane email to see if he has anything.
I did get the Mega PC manual from there,, but that really only covers the basic operation of the machine.

Though that seems to be more CPC oriented it might be worth a quick search :)

I may also try posting on the vintage compueter forum PC section to see if anyone there can be of any help....

Cheers.

It's off topic sorry but to me it is VERY important : could you ask Jason if he would be interested to add some items to the Acorn Chris Pages website ?
I've got a couple of expansion boards not listed on this excellent site.
For preservation purpose I think it would be great.
I'm speaking of this for example :
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10487

but also the series of Millipede Apex boards.
It's quite something as far as the Archimedes, as a professional system, is concerned.
I bought them in the U.K. directly from sbdy programming them for the BBC.
They are the jewels of my collection.
I think it would be a real loss not to have them mentioned and described with photos in Chris' site.

EDIT : No need, I see the Apex board is on their website already, so now it would be great to add it to Chris' pages.

My trick is try archive.org - go back a couple a years on the wayback machine, and voila: a manual.

Well the first one is alive.....or the PC section is anyway.....

After a cleanup with white vinegar and repair of a some tracks it's now able to boot from floppy and hard disk. Though alas the installed hard disk seems to be bad, I attached one from my spares box and got that working......

Cheers.

Still looking for the software that came on the hard disk, as the disks in both machines where toast :(

Cheers.

Funnily enough I'm rescuing one of these right now after being told about the battery problem last weekend though you obvs know all about it since you're both avid Binary Dinosaurs viewers on facebook

I need to find someone local I can borrow a megadrive game from since I don't have a single one so can't test that side of things. I'm just about to try reading the hard drive though.

Cambridge area but I've had to park it for now, I get no signs of life from the board even with the damaged traces repaired :/

Order a few on Ebay they will cost you less than your petrol to collect the game and bring it back ;-)
