Atomic Manic Miner

Postby oss003 » Fri Jul 31, 2015 9:20 pm

Hi guys,

a while ago I started to convert Manic Miner from the BBC to the Atom.
The game is probably a port of another computer and the code is hard to read.
Also is the game using the read character routine of self defined characters and this was hard to understand because you don't always readback the character which was written on the screen, I mean for the characters $80-$ff.
Looks like all characters are read from $80-$9F.

Anyway, the game is almost finished and I added a nice intro with 4 colour text screen!!! I used the routines which were previous shown in the GAGS colourtest and some other split screen colour demo's:
http://www.stardot.org.uk/forums/viewto ... st#p112074

Still a few bugs to go which will hopefully be solved quickly.

There are a few previews on Youtube with the 4 colour screen in preview 3:

Preview 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y0K4lMScUo
Preview 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dbKTwhph0c
Preview 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZECR2_gga4

PS Sorry for the bad quality of preview 3, have to check the settings of my screen capture program.
Hmmmm .... looks ok now, must be the bad internet connection.

Greetings
Kees

looking good :)

Though the speed seems a little uneven, not sure if that's the game or the way it plays back on my tablet :)

Graphics seem very similar to the Dragon version, which also used mode 4, though it uses the other colourset.

Cheers.

Phill.

Probably a YouTube 50/60 Hz skipframe problem because it's ok in Atomulator :(

It was quite a while since I last logged in :(.

Still active on the Atari front?

I'm much more into Intellivision at the moment.

Hi guys,

at last .......... I managed to finish Atomic Manic Miner ........ \:D/

mm.png

I started this project about 2 years ago and had it almost finished but there was still a collision check problem which I couldn't find ....
Manic Miner wasn't able to reach the highest keys and this made it impossible to finish the level.
After trying to find the bug for quite a while, I decided to stop Manic Miner and started with Jet Set Willy 1 and 2.

Last Christmas I came along the source and started debugging again.
This time I did find that @@#$#%^@ bug and was able to finish the first level.
Now I could check all levels and found some more bugs which could be solved.

You can find a preview at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OW9J5EFeBE

I have attached the disk-, tape- and AtoMMC files.
So feel free to download them and have fun with playing.......

Greetings
Kees

Wow Kees, this is BUR-RILLIANT news!

Gonna give it a try now! Congrats on sussing out the bug and thanks for sharing!

BTW, at the Weekend ABug Phill wrote all your game .DSKs to floppy for me so I was able to play them* on my Atom with Phill's disk interface on Sunday evening!

* = there were issues with a few of them but I'll email you both about them shortly...

Kees, is there any way you'd be able to use the code for your Atom version to make an Electron version of this game? There isn't one already.

I think it's a loading memory problem but I'll have a look.

Greetings
Kees
