New Atom owner

Postby trixster » Mon Mar 27, 2017 1:23 pm

I've been reading the Atom forum with interests and no small amount of envy for quite some time. You all seem to be having a lot of fun. So for some reason I've decided to join in.

I picked her up this morning. Outwardly she's a little grubby but otherwise looks in decent enough nick. Here are some photos of the outer and the inners. I'm not going to power her up - I'm going to send her off for a full health check first.

And then a final quick once over

So can someone tell me what I've got here. Some of the photos show some dodgy looking soldering. I can't see any voltage regulators.

Nice catch .... =D>

Looks like 2 crucial IC's are missing, IC49 (address decoder) and IC20 (MOS/Basic).
Without these chips, the Atom won't do anything.

Oh, nice Atom... =D>

A check-up first will be indeed wise.

Missing voltage regulators are not a problem as long you give him a stable 5V input... 8)

They indeed have played about with a soldering iron :( , that's why a check-up is the best step... :D

Atom gurus enough on this forum, I can't wait to see him say on the screen, HELLO WORLD \:D/

You have got a issue 5 Atom with the regulators bypassed (and removed) so it will run off 5V. This is the best issue to have, as it has a much better keyboard.

It's got 12K of RAM.

It looks like the bus buffers have been bypassed, which makes me think possibly someone was running this with an external ROM box of some sort.

Unfortunately, it seems to be missing the 8K Basic/OS ROM. This is hard to replace, because no pin-compatible EPROM exists. You might find one of our Dutch friends has a spare (from an old Atom that was sliced in half). Otherwise, you'll need to source a 28-pin to 24-pin ROM adaptor board.

Thanks chaps!

No ROM! No decoder! Oh no, that's not good. Someone's cut a hole in the back as you can see, so I guess that's where an external rom box might have been connected.

So, anyone got a spare ROM and decoder!!?? [-o<

If I'm not wrong it's:

IC20 MM52164 (If no one else has, I have a spare one...)

IC49 74LS139

This area is messy. Does it look like the correct links have been modded to allow a 5v psu?

Actually, I think they've been soldered on the other side!

I will have a look for a spare rom, but it's quite easy to replace it with a 2764 eprom.

Edit: I just saw that Wim also has one available.

The main board has some damages but its condition is good enough to get this Atom working.

74LS139 ordered.

I've found a 5v 2a psu with a connector that fits nicely. Will 2a be enough with 12k of ram installed?

Trixster,

I think this Atom needs a good cleanup and the best way to do this is clean the areas around the bad soldering points and check if the tracks and connections are ok. The video circuit (around Q1 and Q2) and the printer connector (PL5) need a good inspection and cleanup.

I also noticed C11 and C12 are missing.
C11 is a 10 uF elco needed for a delay in the BREAK circuit and
C12 is a 22 uF elco mounted in the power circuit.

You can find information about the parts here:

Hi Kees, thanks for the details!

So, the good news is out very own TheCorfiot has agreed to take the Atom under his wing and breath life into her. I consider this to be a very good thing! :D He's going to recap my Falcon too so I hope no one else is after much from him for the next few weeks ;)

The plan is to obtain an AtoMMC, a Colour Board and a Ram/Rom upgrade, and in orde to facilitate this PM's have been sent to the resident forum hardware gurus! =D>

Kees, a large part of my desire to get an Atom in the first place is to play your Atomic Elite! So to make that happen we have to deploy our best resources on the task! :)

Hi Wim

you wouldnt have a spare heatsink bracket you could pop in the envelope for trixter too please.

i dont plan on fitting voltage regulators but these brackers are a great place to mount a 6 pin RGB socket :)

Thanks in advance my friend.
