Pre-power-on check

Postby JannievanZyl » Sun Feb 12, 2017 4:43 pm

Opened up my Atom to check if nothing looks obviously wrong and found that the 50Hz converter card loose inside the casing.

Seems like it should plug into IC31 and with a pin-1 to pin-1 orientation (duh...) so I plugged it in like that as per the attached picture.

You guys happy that I'm not going to blow anything up when I power it on? :)

While on the topic, I noticed the following IC sockets are bare;

IC1
IC2
IC3
IC4
IC 5
IC 24
IC 50

What cool goodies can one plug in here? :)

OK, found the details. :)

IC1 - 6522 VIA
IC2 - 8195 - if bus extender (PL6) is fitted
IC3 - 8195 - if bus extender (PL6) is fitted
IC4 - 8304- if bus extender (PL6) is fitted
IC5 - 7430 - if bus extender (PL6) is fitted
IC24 - utilities ROM if PL7 is fitted
IC50 - &$244 - to drive Centronics printer

Seems the machine is a fully configured with RAM and ROM as is possible without going to the external BUS extenders. So I got a nicely configured system.

How are you planning on powering it, and have you checked if the regulators have been bypassed (LK7 is the bypass link)? If they have, make sure you only give it 5v regulated!

Hi Jannie,

First you have to check the power supply because the original Atom had an 8V power supply and used 2 regulators (IC53/54) to make 5V.
Most people bypassed these regulators (LK6/7) and used a decent 5V power supply.

So before you power your Atom up, first check if LK6/7 are installed, if so DON'T use 8V.

That's the first time I see the original 50 Hz board but I haven't seen a schematic 202,003 yet ......... :-k
There is a schematic 102,003 which looks a lot like your board but I'm not sure if this is the right schematic: http://www.bighole.nl/pub/mirror/homepa ... 2_003c.gif

The rest looks fine.

Greetings
Kees
