Small update:

The SDcard can be read and the menu allows me to run programs for testing.
Apparently when trying to save a file it still does not work yet.
saving a basic program with SAVE "TEST" results in
RESP?
ERROR 175

not sure what causes that yet.

Appears that my SDcards are very slow to respond to commands for writing.
With the help of Dave we could track it down to a loop that terminates after 256 iterations and commented out the branch with NOP's.
Now I have at least one SDHC card that i can read and write at 30 MHz CPU speed. Not bad for a open source based FPGA toolchain.

Time to play a bit more with my miniatom. I wonder how fast it reads/writes. might even be fast enough for animations directly from SDcard.
