Archimedes A310
27-AKB10-1000226

Would that be the 226th A310 produced ? (copyright says 1987, does it change with other years of production ?)

Received this week, PSU dead, appears to have RO 2.0 and I think 4 Mbytes of RAM.

Acorn A4 (from picture seen on Ebay) :
01-AKB64-1010566

is there a way to know how much RAM it's got and if there's a hard drive, thanks to the serial number ?

AKB10 is an A305, so that 'A310' has been upgraded. I think both the A305 and A310 only had a single production run, so that is probably the 226th A305 made.

I'd be a little surprised though if it actually does have 4MB and is still running RISC OS 2.

Chris's Acorns has a useful product code list (http://chrisacorns.computinghistory.org.uk/ProductCodes.html). The AKB64 isn't listed, however the main page for the A4 does say it is a 4MB, 60MB hard disc system.

Thanks Tom, that's very helpful.
So the front sticker would have been changed, as it has the sticker 'Archimedes 310' ?
What you say makes sense (as susual) : this A310 must be an A305 upgraded to 1 Mbyte, and it's been upgraded to RO 2.

Does sbdy know how many A305s (with 512 kbytes) were produced ?
I'm not sure but I remember Acorn stopped the production after 6 or 12 months to switch to 1 Mbyte ... smart move (to me).

Have a great week end.

Biggest A305 serial number I've seen is 1002053, compared to biggest A310 serial number of 1022931. So the A305 production run was pretty small, though still larger than the A440 (1000357).

??? Do you mean only 357 or so A440 were ever sold ?
I remember Watford and others were selling upgraded A420 to match the A440 specs (or even better) at inferior prices but ... less than 400 units it's ... ridiculously small

Xavier, Archies lover who will never understand Acorn marketing strategy (if that ever existed before they understand the ARM chip and chip making were their future).

The original A440 was only on the market for about 18 months, and for about three times the price of an A310 (and predating the existence of RISC OS or any software that could justify spending that kind of money), so it's pretty rare. The A440/1 did sell better; at least two production runs I think, a few thousand made. The A410/1 is the most common of the 4x0/1 series, the A420/1 is surprisingly uncommon.

Don't confuse the A440 with the A440/1 - they are quite different ;) The A440 came with Arthur OS, ST506 HDD and had a moulded floppy drive (a Sony model, like the A310) it was sold from 1987 alongside the A305 and A310.

The A440/1 came with RISC OS 2, ST506 HDD and had a removable floppy drive (made by Citizen, like the A3000), it was sold alongside the A410/1 and A420/1 from early 1989.

And as Tom indicates, the A440 and A440/1 sold in very different numbers.

I remember that when I upgraded my A310 to dual floppy, the Acorn kit not only came with a new fascia with slots for 2 floppy drives, but a packet of labels to stick on it which included Archimedes A305. Archimedes A310, Archimedes 440 and, I think, others so you could correct label your upgraded computer or totally mislabel it :) .

Are there no Iyonix serial numbers? Someone was interested in how many were sold at the ROUGOL meeting on monday and it's been nearly seven years since it was discontinued...

I've just rediscovered my A3010 at the bottom of a box. It's got the stickers across the top. Serial number 01-AGB15-1010033. It's got the 'Adelaide' processor board inside, and it works. Minor battery corrosion to be dealt with. That serial number seems very 'round' to me, but perhaps it's just the 10033rd machine made...

More likely to be the 33rd machine as it's an Adelaide board A3010 but given Acorn's unfathomable serial numbering process, it might just as easily be the 642nd machine off the production line

True! I do know, however, that it was a machine given/lent by Acorn to my brother back in 1992ish to do some demo artwork on, so it probably came straight from a cupboard at Acorn HQ. Who knows what they had lying around.

I'm new around here but have acquired a few pieces of Acorn kit, the serial numbers of which are:

BBC Model B Issue 7 (technically not mine, but left by the previous owner of my previous office -- should really get it back to him): Sticker on the motherboard and the bottom lists it as an AB electronic systems ltd 189867,

BBC Model B Issue 3: Orange sticker 001192. Sadly the last time this machine was turned on it gave a lovely cloud of smoke (in the middle of a Uni open day -- oops). I suspected this was the PSU caps, but looking the other day shows a nasty burn mark on the bottom of the motherboard and case…

BBC B+64K: Bottom case serial 01-ANB53-5517983 Date on motherboard 14 Aug 85

I have a 6502 second processor hooked up to that which doesn't have any serial visible on it (also needs some TLC as most of the time it doesn't boot properly -- I've already had to replace the cable).

BBC Master: My latest acquisition, no serial number visible but the internal co-processor does have one 24-ADC06-2001547.

Acorn A3010: Serial 82-agb12-1018042 -- works but I need to clean up the mess where the battery has leaked (fortunately doesn't seem to have spread too far).

Acorn A5500 (belongs to an ex-PhD student): 25-ALB12-1013211 and it's Acorn branded (Lite-on manufactured) monitor's serial: 71-AKF18-1018121

That's it.
