How do I test the veracity of my tapes?

Postby Commie_User » Wed Jan 04, 2017 8:06 pm

How do I ask my BBC B to listen out for any errors as I run tape data past it?

I've noticed a quirk. It doesn't seem to count every block. ?MUSIC displays as three blocks big but the data just goes on and on. There are plenty of files like that, so I suppose I just have to trust it and back it up anyway.

The might be some sort of copy protection/dedicated loader.

Like you said, try backing it up and see if the copy works.

If there is protection, it's fun to try and break it to see how it works. :D (But safest doing that with a working copy rather than wearing out the old tape.)

That sounds about right. I always back up to WAV before even loading and it seems to all go, as far as I can load it.

If I'm still in a jam, tape images of Music System exist online. But only my Issue 7 board loads them.

protected tapes are a bit funny, & old ones.
Some MIA tapes I made to .SSD could not make a .UEF, but only loaded into an Issue3 beeb
& the issue4 beeb loads stream loaders like Space Hi-Way, but my other beebs don't even show it :?

Is that what the annoyance was when I put those MP3s up. It's all I can do but our poor Beebs are getting old and deaf.

The music system has copy copy protection, special data that it loads by a loader, I have 100% working copied of the originals (which will not load on an emulator) and also a unprotected version (attached) which does work on beeb-em or on a real BBC.

Thank you. I have no problem with loading and backing up tape copies, though of course more copies are always welcome.

Does anyone have the disk images which can work on the MMC?

Thank you.

Interestingly enough, there is a disk version and I have it on both disk and disk image - which fails on the MMC.

I also think the actual tape version is different because it requires no temp file conversion from module to module. There was a third disk to convert your work in progress, to - say - make your song operate in envelope mode after putting it together in keyboard mode! I never got the hang of it, so I should think many of us would welcome a tape-disk transfer, if you're being so kind.

I was looking at the disc versions I have and both don't load completely on MMC one not at all the other keeps trying to set *D. (Disc) will have a look and see if i remove the reference to disc if it will run on a MMC card.

^use MMFS as that does not need CARD/MMFS/DMMC, it used DISC/DISK, so may fix....

try this:

Thanks you. I had a go in Beeb-Em and it froze on the copyright screen. When I'm able to get my hands on the MMC, I'll see what happens there.

But of course, the tape loads no problem. And that counts most.

Here is one I have been working on have changed all references of "DISC" or "D." to "CARD" can now load and get into the different modules running it on my BBC with a MMC card.
