Acorn Computers Ltd

Postby lazarusr » Sun Jan 10, 2016 10:24 am

Does anyone know who this is?

It appears that in August 2014, the name Acorn Computers Ltd was registered at Companies House (see here.) Acorn Computers Ltd is, of course, the company name that was briefly relicensed in 2006 in an attempt to use the brand to sell Windows PCs (see this Wikipedia article).

The sole director is given as Sir Simon Alexander Tolhurst-Simms. He is the director of a number of other companies (see here), including Syole Limited, which correlates with the Facebook page. Syole has a website at http://www.syole.com which appears to be a placeholder. There is, however, a more active Facebook page (here).

Finally, on a slightly unrelated note there is this: http://www.acorncomputers.com/en/. A WHOIS search shows that this domain name is licensed to Acorn Inc Ltd. The related domain, acorncomputers.co.uk, is owned by 'Data Access' trading as 'Brand Access'. However, http://www.acorncomputers.co.uk just links to the .com domain name.

Acorn Inc Ltd's sole director is Samuel Jonathan Goult. I can't find much about him.

It does seem that there remains interest in the Acorn Computers brand.

Data Access SaRL is a french company that specialises in obtaining trademarks of former well known brand names that have closed or no longer used by their owners in order to licence them for re-use by companies looking for a memorable brand name. It looks like in this particular case someone has a business idea that they are planning to use the Acorn brand name for but hasn't started using it yet.

It would be good if they use it for something interesting rather than the last attempt to just rebrand commodity PCs

The Acorn brand was re-used by a box shifter about 10 years ago as well, and suppose this company has re-bought it, after that company gave up/folded. I remember commenting on it back then, here's the link to the post (and the post as a link to the iconbar forums with more detail about it)

From the mid-2000's PC shifter relaunch I got one of those snazzy Acorn branded ATA/USB2 external hard drives.

I think RISC OS Bits has a stock and is shifting them (for quite a sum)
