Anion 3 - previously unpublished game

Postby ash73 » Sun Feb 07, 2016 4:21 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm the author of a text adventure game called Anion 3 which I wrote for the BBC micro in 1987/88. The game was never published, but MartinB recently rescued the program from an old 5.25" disk and asked if I would post it on here for others to try.

Martin used his UPURS software here to recover the program, there's an intro thread here with more details.

Anion 3 is a text adventure with some head-scratching puzzles and interesting characters that wander around the map, mostly trying to kill you, while you attempt to save a spaceship in a decaying orbit around the planet.

NOTES
1. Type 'MENU' to access the menus, press ESC to return to the game.
2. Activate 6502 second processor in BeebEm to use the enhanced version with no disk access.
3. Use the hint sheet as a last resort!

>>> EDITS <<<

v2.1 - initial release, original 87/88 game with a couple of bug fixes.
v2.2 - new splash screen with more contemporary graphics, added a victory screen, and a few other minor mods.
v2.3 - fixed instructions layout, a few edits to location descriptions and messages, menu no longer requires write-access.
v2.4 - added 6502 tube version, squeezes 35K of text and 22K of program all into RAM!
v2.5 - tidied up code, minor bug fixes.
v2.6 - added Master 128 SRAM support (tube version is faster).

Yes, very nice artwork! There could be some potential for the enhanced mode 1 treatment here, I imagine.

Looks promising. I'll give it a go later on once I've managed to get Captain Blizzard off the ship on "Blood of the Mutineers".

Does it load entirely into memory or is it a disc adventure ?

Nice idea, changing the palette on each row is very clever! It did inspire me to update the graphics a bit; I used a tool called IMAGE2BBC to create a new splash screen. I remember drawing the original by hand with a spray tool!

Latest disk image (2.4) includes a 6502 tube version which pre-loads the text into RAM; runs a lot faster. If you're using BeebEm just switch on the 6502 second processor in the hardware menu. Was an interesting exercise dipping into assembler to access the tube interface, thanks to tricky and others for pointing me in the right direction.

I'm supposed to be learning C# at the moment but this is more fun :D

Hi all, just curious did anyone get anywhere with the game? Didn't seem to generate much interest but I enjoyed playing it again!

Don't know how I missed this!
It looks good.
I will try to take a look at it pretty soon.

Looks very good! Haven't had a proper play with it yet, but, for ease of reference, here are the instructions in plain text, extracted from the program $.INSTRUC:

Code: Select all

>>> ANION3 <<<

MISSION BRIEFING
================

MESSAGE TO CARBON UNIT 340972

Nemesis XL-4 has sustained damage in a meteor storm on its pre-programmed route to Xlon. The ship's computers have repaired most of the damage but the energy crystal which provides power for the engines was completely destroyed.

Nemesis, completely devoid of power drifted aimlessly through space until it eventually entered into the gravitational field of the Anion star system. The ship was pulled into orbit around the third planet of the system - a little known planet recorded merely as 'Anion 3'.

Without the power provided by the energy crystal Nemesis XL-4 is unable to sustain its orbit around the planet for a long period of time, and is even now beginning to fall towards the planet surface, its orbit gradually decaying.

ANION SYSTEM

This small and relatively insignificant star system is located on the outer edge of our galaxy. It consists of an E-type star and six planets, two of which are capable of supporting life.

Nemesis XL-4 has been drawn into the gravitational pull of the inner-most of these two planets - Anion 3. It is known that there are a number of energy crystals hidden away in the cities of this primitive and inhospitable planet, and it is your mission to beam down to the planet surface, locate an energy crystal and return to the ship with it so that power can be restored to the engines.

Time is quickly running out for the ship so you must hurry. It is known that Anion 3 is a densely populated planet and that most of the inhabitants are likely to be hostile. It is a low-tech primitive world whose creatures are fabled for their vicious and ruthless nature.

PLAYING ANION 3

Anion 3 is a text adventure.

You can communicate with the computer using the keyboard by typing in normal English instructions and pressing 'Return'.

The program can cope with fairly complex instructions and has a large vocabulary, so you should have no problems explaining to the computer what it is that you want to do. For example :-

GET THE CONTROLLER
LOOK AT IT CAREFULLY
RUN TO THE EAST QUICKLY
EXAMINE THE WARRIOR
KILL THE LIZARD WITH THE AXE
HOLD UP THE IDOL
SAY HELLO

If you wish to repeat a command you should press '@' followed by 'Return' this is useful when attacking creatures etc. To travel north, south, east or west, you can if you wish use the cursor keys.

When the main game has loaded the main text screen will appear. Situated at the bottom is a blue bar which displays your score and strength.

At the top of the screen is the menu bar. To use this during the game type 'MENU'. A small arrow will appear just below the menu bar. Move it to the desired menu using the cursor keys and press 'Return'. There are various options available. These are as follows....

MENU 1 :    LOAD     - Loads a game position
SAVE     - Saves a game position
            CATALOG  - Displays disc contents
            DELETE   - Deletes a file

MENU 2 :    LONG     - Selects long text
            SHORT    - Selects short text
            MIXTURE  - See below
            SELECTED - Displays current mode

MENU 3 :    CREATURE - Creature present
            SOLVED   - Puzzles solved
            LOCATION - Location code
            CREDITS  - Copyright notice

MENU 4 :    SCORE    - Displays your score
            TIME     - Displays time remaining
            STRENGTH - Displays strength
            VISITED  - Places visited

Note - pressing 'Escape' at any time returns you to the game mode.

The 'mixture' mode has the following effects....

1) If the location has been visited before a short
   description will be given.

2) If not then a long description will be given.

---- Special Verbs ----

USE - This verb only works with a few objects.
Try the boat or the vine.

PRINT/NOPRINT - These switch on & off the printer mode, which
sends the text to the printer as well as to the
                screen.

Let the adventure begin....

I got to score 8, something tells me I'm missing something in looking for the remote to get of the darn ship LOL if it's in those barrels which incidentally tell me its worth a closer look, I still don't see it!

Have a good search around the cargo canisters by all means, there's something you will need on the planet, but to retrieve the remote you need to get through the locked door; you won't have to look far to find your personal ID code ;)

LOL I must be thick! Been up and down the ship looked at everything I can see. I think it must be in the sleeping pod but scratching my head as to how to find it.

Liking the interface for the game I have to say.
