Is that it?

Postby melchett » Thu Jun 17, 2004 5:58 pm

I've noticed over the last year that the number of new events/developments in the BBC scene seem to be decreasing? Have we now reached "emulation maturity" where we've discovered 99% of all the games that were written and uploaded them to the internet, written all the emualtors we want currently and pretty much have all the information on the web to support the old faithful Beeb?

Anyone have any views on what could be interesting "next steps" to inject a bit more interest / development back into this scene?

I doubt it really since I have a lot of games/stuff that are not on the archive. I emailed the site webmaster to ask him whether I could add my collection to the site and if he's busy since I have a lot of time I could help and add my collection to the archive myself but so far I have had no reply.
Yeah, I'm guessing he's been quite busy recently with his day job (or maybe he's won the lottery?) as there hasn't been any "news" for over two months now.

Out of curiousity, what sort of things do you have to submit? Any hidden gems in there ?

Don't be put off by the lack of response, I'm sure the STH adminisitrator will get back to you when he gets the time...

Come on! Cronosoft has released a brand new game! Time to start doing that game you always wanted to release. I've got one idea which I'm currently having a go at.

new high quality images

I am launching my version of MakeUEF, which will be V1.1. There are a lot of tapes done with it and csw.exe. Dave has done the site and scanning and oversees the file naming. When Dave makes the site public it will soon be updated with my second batch of files.

Electrem Future supports csw files via my csw.dll file, which is available at World Of Spectrum with instructions on use.

When MakeUEF is available you can learn from the manual how to make csw and hq.uef files. A mono cassette player, an amplifier and a couple of cables are required. Once you know how to set the tone and volume controls you know how to make a recording. The things to look for are usually dropouts by listening while recording; electrical hum/hiss by viewing gaps close up particularly with very small gaps;

It is best to scan your cassettes to ensure that files and cassette scans are put together correctly. A low res. scan will do and Dave will do a high res. scan from his tapes. A few cassettes can be done together with only two scans (one for each side).

Acornsoft and Micro Power cassettes are easy ones to do for practise and theres are loads of titles not done.

The new site is: www.acornpreservation.org/
Nice one Fraser - it's always good to see a new Acorn site emerging Do we get any "pre-release" teasers on what we might expect to see on the site? Sounds ambitious from the URL...

There will be tape images of a lot of non-standard tapes. Theres many Firebirds and Ultimates. A lot of companies made a small number of non-standard tapes.

BTW I had trouble running A&F Planes on BBC emulators but it ran on Electrem. Kamikaze has a red inlay which I thought was A&Fs BBC tape colour so thats odd. I wonder if Kamikaze came out for the BBC or only the Electron.

Planes / Kamikaze

Postby Jeremy Grayson » Sat Jul 10, 2004 5:20 pm

Hiya,

From what I remember, Kamikaze was simply Planes re-named for the Electron. Never have found a reason for this - I don't think Planes was an arcade conversion, so the big arcade game companies' stopping of Superior, Acornsoft, A&F et al from using that name, in the same way as they did with Q*Bert, Defender, Frogger etc., ought not to have come into play. Maybe A&F just prefered a new name for it.
MakeUEF

Postby Fraser » Sat Jul 17, 2004 5:47 pm

I have sent the manual for MakeUEF to Thomas Harte to be available at his Electrem site. I don't want the programs to be available until www.acornpreservation.org is launched. It is sensible to read the manual before using the programs anyway.
