Evening Star/Southern Belle 1992 Versions

Postby Dave_E » Sun Apr 12, 2015 10:55 pm

About 2 years ago, I won an eBay auction containing a boxset of Hewson's Southern Belle and Evening Star.

I have never seen this particular variant before. It comes in a nice cardboard box impressed with the original Evening Star cover-art but has the "new" (Nineties) version of the logo and the two names "Southern Belle" and "Evening Star" in the corner. I have attached it so you can see how different it is to the original versions (in the StH archive).

On the sides of the cardboard box is a sticker denoting BBC/Electron.

Inside the box is a double-sided cassette, also labelled BBC/Electron. Again I've attached this for your perusal.

Finally we come to the tape itself. These two train simulators are complicated pieces of code. As far as I know only the BBC versions are available on *disc*. It looks as though someone was contracted to create "dual" versions - i.e. self-modifying code depending on target machine - for this special pack.

I have transferred both sides of the tape to the attached SSDs which are also attached.

Probably this is a question for Bill Carr but, seeing as these don't work from disc as is, can they be hacked to work and, if so, can we then see whether they also work on an Electron (as this will be two more games to cross off the list of "do not work from disc").

Are you sure you've transferred the final files completely and correctly?
SB contains DFS code for the final &700 bytes, from &7180 to &7880.
Estar contains the same from &7300 to the end of the file, which includes the execute address of &7380. :(

Ah darn it, maybe not. I transferred them on a real Beeb and they're huge files so maybe it couldn't handle them all. That's probably why they don't work.

Unfortunately I left those tapes at my parents' place up north as I was "sure" I now had the tapes transferred to disc...

Ok, well we can place this thread on hold then until I'm next up there to do a proper transfer.

If they're "only" &6700 bytes long, then they could've been loaded at &1500 and still given the complete MODE7 for *SAVE-ing. Alternatively, a small BASIC program could've loaded them at &1900 and then *SAVEd without messing up the screen.
I've checked the file EStar against the disk version, as it's the same length and start & execute address, and although the files are different, a lot of things are vaguely in the same place, except when things go wrong at &72E0 (SAVE ESTAR 2000+6700 7380) onwards.

Sorry to revive an oldish thread, but I'm interest if someone has a disk version of Southern Belle working.

Actually, even the tape version on STH doesn't seem to work in Elkulator 1.0 or ElectrEm 0.6:

Is that on a real Elk or an Emulator?

I have the original tape working on a real Elk, but not yet on an Emulator.

And any additional ROMs seem to mess up the display blanking timing.

Did anyone get any further with these?
Do you fancy sending them to BillC to archive Dave??

Lee.
