Here's the game transferred to .SSD with *XFER (ADT ROM) and then hacked to run from disc:

    CASTAWAY.ssd.zip
.SSD DFS disc-image of Castaway by Simonsoft, a.k.a. Island Adventure by Helen Percy

Here's the documentation from everygamegoing.com:

Thanks, Col and Dave_E!

Fantastic find.

BTW you can get this game to save to disc.

Firstly, although te game loads at &1000 through to &7C00, there is actually just the authors credits between &1000 and &1100 which can be removed leaving the game loading at &1100 throught to &7C00.

Secondly, there is a *TAPE routine at &764E in the shape of LDA#&8C which can be changed to LDA#&C8 or something then save the game as ISL2 1100+6B00 7641.

The game can now save and load a file called DATA to/from disc.
It is saved at &34A0 and is just 0080 in length.

I have saved a DATA file on the above disc - which was saved at the very start of the game. Without a DATA file the game will crash from disc.

The only problem is there is a text message saying "Find a nice bit of tape" which needs changing or removing - which I not been able to locate yet.

regards,
Mick

It's compressed & displayed the same way as the game sentences / descriptions.
From &74EB in the code...

Code: Select all

74EB LDA #&EF
74ED JSR &7872
74F0 OSCLI 3480 'SAVE"DATA"34A0 3520'

You can see the effect by

Code: Select all

*LOAD ISL2
A%=&EF:CALL&7872

NOPping 5 bytes from 74EB through to 74EF will get rid of the message.

PS I will write some full instructions for this game and include it on the up and coming Disc116.

Lee spotted that the walkthrough mentions a sequel, but I haven't been able to find any trace of it.

But I did come across this ad for the original Castaway (a.k.a. Island Adventure, a.k.a. The Three Island Adventure), in the June 1984 issue of Acorn User magazine:
