Omniflop and .adf files

Postby GuitarPhil » Mon Feb 08, 2016 9:51 pm

Hi everyone,

I have managed to fit my old Windows XP Dell Dimension 9150 with an even older floppy drive and get it working

I've been trying to convert some of my old Archimedes ADFS disks (they're on DSDD floppies) and I've ended up with .adf files which are showing as 400k in XP.

Does this sound correct? (I seemed to recall these disks should be 800k but it's been a long time since my A310 and Risc PC bit the dust :(

Thanks for any help for an old programmer with 'senior memory'

Hullo :) - Should be 800k, or 640k if 8-Bit ADFS. Are you sure you're grabbing both sides with omniflop?

Hi Daniel,

Thanks. Looks like I'm missing one side

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

It seems I have to save the image as ADL then change the extension to ADF

Glad you found the solution. :)

Just to confirm this is a common problem, here are some notes I made a few years back:

Adf seems to be the most common type for distributing Archimedes software on the Internet for use with Arculator etc., but OmniFlop defines this as a single-sided (head 0) format. If I try to read an ADFS 800K floppy to an adf file, it tells me that the image is not big enough and it did not take the whole disc.

I discovered by trial and error that I can read/write 800K discs to adl (double sided interleaved) and img (standard disc image) files OK. The A3000 recognises floppies reconstituted from both these types. Also, if I rename them .adf Arculator accepts them.

So everything works fine except that I have to rename the files to use them with Arculator, which seems a little strange. It implies that the adf file type means different things to OmniFlop and Arculator.

I’m told that Amigas use adf files too, so I’m guessing that the Acorn and Commodore communities use the same extension to denote different formats - but I’m not sure.

Thanks guys.

It's a bit confusing :? but hopefully the .adl files I've created will work when renamed to .adf. I'm awaiting the VirtualRPC AdjustSA that I ordered last Friday and fingers crossed the 'disk's' will load and run ok [-o<

I can confirm Omniflop makes .ADL files from Archimedes floppy discs and renaming them to .ADF allows them to work with Archimedes emulators.
