Or maybe this just isn't going to work, because of the 8bit/16bit differences.

There is apparently a way of doing it with dd, but it takes several hours:
http://www.stardot.org.uk/forums/viewto ... f=2&t=3556

Jon's got the CF utils compiled for the Mac - perhaps he'd be able to compile them for linux?

Success, at least in getting the CF Card written.

All I needed to to was to insert zero bytes between every byte of your image, to turn it into a 16 image, that I could then used with dd.

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/perl
$srcfile = "dosfordave.dat";
$dstfile = "test";
open(FILE, $srcfile) or die "can't open $srcfile: $!";
open(DST,">".$dstfile) or die "can't open $dstfile: $!";
binmode(FILE);
binmode(DST);
while (read(FILE, $buff, 8*1024)) {
    foreach (split(//, $buff)) {
        print DST $_;
        printf(DST"%c",0x00);
    }
}
close(FILE);
close(DST);

This is now recognised by Data Centre.

Unfortunately, the 80x86 Co Pro seems very temperamental on the Model B (this contains my DataCentre at the moment). I can't even get this to boot from Floppy. I might try moving the DataCentre over to the master, and give this a go.

Some info here on doing the padding business, with a handy bit of code written by Sweh to replace the code I'd been given originally on the Ubuntu forums:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8079&start=0

Mainly about USB transfer speeds though, but the code is there!

Hi,
Is there anyone here who could copy me the 4 Master 512 discs on 5.25" floppy and getting them to me please?
(Version 2.1 DOS if possible)
It would save me the pain of attempting to create them myself...
Alternatively, could someone post DSD type images that I could use a datacentre beeb to write to disc??
I need them to test a 512 I am working on.

Thanks in advance!

Ergh - Lee, they're a pain to make as you can't write them with a datacentre using the usual methods. They're double density, and the datacentre's only geared up to deal with single. I did it on 3.5" floppies ages ago, and it was a right pain in the proverbial. I burned the disk in anger, and now I've only got a CF image which I think I uploaded a while back.

I did it with the Datacentre using information here: http://www.cowsarenotpurple.co.uk/bbcco ... ystem.html, JGH's USB filer to get the disk images onto the CF ADFS hard drive, then ImgToDisk to write the images out to floppy: http://mdfs.net/Apps/DiskTools/

After I did it, I distinctly remember having a stiff drink.

Oh rats! :evil:
I don't think I have the time or patience to face this at the minute :( but I sure could do with the stiff drink :lol:

Have you got a PC that can write 5.25" floppies? Or a pair of 3.5" drives for the beeb and PC that'll write floppies with omniflop?

err... no and no.
I have an UPURS cable, a datacentre beeb with UPURS ROM, and a PC with a serial port.
I also have little patience left at the minute :lol:
This may be the solution to everything: http://www.stardot.org.uk/forums/viewto ... 85#p126906

Hi,
I am sober again :D so I will give this another shout....

If anyone is capable of creating 2 sets of the 4 Util disks for the M512 I would be very grateful indeed.
That's 8 disks, which I could either supply, or purchase from whoever steps up to the plate... :wink:

Am I right in thinking that if someone has the 'right' set up, and a set of these disks to hand, this is as easy as copying any disks?? :-k

Thanks in advance,

Lee.

I have a Master 512, with the discs. However, I haven't a scooby on how to copy them, nor if I have the correct setup.
What I can do though, is, if you PM me your snail mail addy, I can post them to you, and you can then copy them yourself (don't worry, I have two copies of said discs...the originals and a copy).

You can use the "DISK" application and choose the "Copy Diskette" option. I believe you have to format the disks appropriately first though. Disk 1 is the 640kb format, the other 3 are the 800kb format. Section 2.3 (and beyond) of the user guide here:

Hi Gerald And Daniel,
Firstly, Thank you Gerald for a fantastically festive offer =D>
Secondly, Daniel, does Gerald have the 'right' set up merely by having the discs, the M512, and any common-or-garden working disc drive?
Thirdly, if the answer is "YES"... Gerald, would you prefer to copy them and charge me for the discs? or send them to me as you mentioned above??

Thank ya,

Lee.

Hi Lee,

It would probably be best way would be for me to send them down to you - so much going on at the moment that getting discs copied would get pushed to the bottom of the pile, but popping discs into the mail doesn't take five minutes which then lets you take your time over copying them (and no rush getting them back to me).

Cheers,

Gerald.

I received the M512 discs from Gerald, and after a bit of a slow start (due to some of my dodgy discs and a dodgy disc drive), I now have made 3 sets of the discs.
Thanks to all!
Oh, and Gerald - I will get your discs back to you asap :D

Hi there,
resurrecting old thread ..
At the last Halifax, Simon kindly helped put together a 6522-via-Master-modem-port circuit so that I can plug in an sd card for use with a modded MMFS -- this circuit now being the basis for the "MEUP" board that DaveH is producing. DaveH has also kindly sent me a board with MMFS and another rom (SD2?) to plug in to cartridge port so that the sdcard-via-modem--port will work. This means I can plug in a mouse in to the user port, sd card in to modem port..and via Matchbox Copro, boot DOSplus and run GEM via the 286 copro option.

BUT

to do that I need to get the M512 disk images on to an sdcard.

Has any kind soul got an image for the relevant disks so that I can transfer to SDcard on my PC? All the above looks a bit hard :) and also seems to be for CF cards.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

Or you can use the MMC Hard Drive solution with the image Dave provided. It has the M512 discs pre-installed.

Thanks DutchAcorn and george.h - I spent ages yesterday searching for it but couldn't find it. I was using search terms like "Master 512" and "sd card". Just spinning up win32diskimager now :)

I'm struggling to get the discs for my Master 512. I've got twin 3.5" drives but no aform (for the adfs). Would I be able to format the discs and move the files onto them using my risc pc?

JGH hosts quite a lot of RISC OS disk tools. Did you have a look there? http://mdfs.net/Apps/DiskTools/

You can format ADFS-L (ie, 640K) disks on RISC OS, and then copy whatever you need onto them. ImgToDisk will let you write an AcornDOS 800K disk image to a floppy, ImgToDisk filename 0 800K -format should do it, add -verbose to get verbose info.

I gave this a go today with varying success. I got a partial write of the master 128 disc using size 640k but nothing worked on it, and it wrote the acorn dos one using 800k but that didn't work at all. I'll keep trying! :)

I just tried the boot one as a 640k disc and it comes up boot strap loader, then says it can't find system file 6502 .sys on boot disk. Best I've got so far :D

I've managed to write a full version of the welcome disk with all the files. I can see all the files and folders but what ever I run I just get bad command? So following the 128 user manual, adfs then chain"welcome40" or chain"welcome80" bad command, same if I try to run anything else?
