Possibly Unscanned Acorn Circuit Diagrams - Need Help!

Postby flibble » Thu May 25, 2017 2:06 am

Whilst at ABUG Camby, CCH gave me a folder of Acorn docs to see if there was anything of interest in it.

Part of it is a collection of circuit diagram for the System, Atom, BBC and Electron series of machines. There does appear to be unscanned items in each category.

The Help I need is, is there anyone in the London-ish area with access to an A3 scanner that doesn't mind me turning up with about 40 sheets to scan? :)

I've checked the following site and (OLD) means I think diagrams are already scanned

If you can come to Central London one evening, I am pretty sure that the scanners at work are A3.

Depending on the quality, it may be worthwhile scanning the items where there are already images available. In order to get much higher resolution images. I say this, because a fair number of the schematics that are available on the internet have sections that are hard to read :(

I do have a color A3 scanner and access to a A0 scanner.
However I'm not in the London area but in Haarlem, The Netherlands.
Sending the schematics is not an option I guess?

I'm just outside of Portsmouth and I have an A3 scanner/copier/printer.

Wouldn't be too difficult to do, if you're happy with driving down to the South coast.

Let me know if that helps and I can PM you an address and we can work out when you can come down.
I'm writing a game where you can change your character from a Wizard to a monkey to a cat.

Well, Imogen that!

An update, this week I have access to an A3 scanner, but it doesn't quite have my ideal specs, only scans to compressed jpeg.

Here is a scan of the Electron Plus 1 diagram at 600dpi greyscale JPEG, at this res it is very readable and the slight badness in the scan is mainly down to the photocopiedness of the original.

If people think this is an acceptable version I'll start to scan the rest of them.

Firefox appears to hold back on showing the full resolution on my machine, but in the GIMP, I can see that there is more detail. I'm not really convinced that there is really 600dpi there, however, and as you suggest, the JPEG compression means that there are artefacts. You may get just as good output scanning at 300dpi or even less with the given constraints.

I see that the usual issue of "+" appearing as a circle still arises, and I guess that this is just a general problem with Acorn's diagrams. So more resolution probably won't help deal with these fundamental problems. Still, even with these things, this is probably a better version of the diagram than any other I've seen.

Yeah, some of the other characters and symbols also suffer, like the 'K's for example. As said, the problem is the source material.

Yes, very much so, however some of the originals are in much better nick, like this one, and it turns out pretty much flawlessly.

I did decide to keep scanning in this format, the scans are picking up all the imperfections in the photocopied originals, without adding anymore of their own :)

The scan looks fine to me. Although a lossless compression format would have been better, a high quality, high resolution JPEG image like this is fine :D

The res of the scans works out to be about 60 Megapixels, which is a lot more than my swanky camera. Unfortunately lossless compression was not an option on this network connected scanner :(

Unfortunately due to a quirk of this moderator not knowing what button he was clicking I managed to overwrite 1024MAK's reply with my own ...

Who moderates the moderators? Why the moderators moderate the moderators! Although some of the moderation is accidental moderation. =D>

The administrators moderate the moderators!

It is rather too easy, to hit the wrong on screen 'button' and only later realise that you have dropped a clanger  #-o
Here's a challenge. I had to recreate a thread that I accidentally deleted from the cache from my browser  . See if you can find it...

Peter, it may be too late now, but you could borrow my nice Epson GT-15000 USB scanner? I could potentially drop it off with your bro in Leicester over the next couple of days, before I go away for the rest of July/August. LMK!

Hi Malc, these weren't in the a3 diagrams that I'd already uploaded, but are part of a larger folder of docs that I've yet to tidy up enough to upload.

But to tide you over in the meantime, here are the 4 pages about the data recorder.
