Getting files off an old A410

Postby Dave Footitt » Thu Nov 13, 2014 5:15 pm

A friend of mine has got an old A440 (running Risc OS 3.11) and would like to get the files off it before the HD packs up.

What's the best way? He's tried XModem (via ArcTerm7, ZAnsi and Connector) but they all seem to cancel the transfer :?:

Is there some nice simple software he can use?

Cheers

There's a bug in the Arc's serial hardware so you need to use a specially crafted serial cable. Does your friend have one or is it a standard serial cable?

If you don't have an Ethernet card, you don't have many other options apart from the floppy drive...

Is the transfer cancelled right from the start or do some of the blocks transfer ok?

I stuggled with the same issue a few months ago and I think it had something to do with a buffer filling up.

Cheers, I believe with ZModem it gets about 50% through, then aborts..

Is there an Econet available? Copying it to a network file server would do the trick.

Bring it to Halifax, it sounds like we will be able to do it there.

My own Archimedes is a bit unaccessibe at the moment

I found a link here that addresses the serial buffer issue. You can try if that fixes it and, if not, you can also try a lower transfer speed.

Cheers, sadly the serial buffer thing didn't work :(

Weirdly it apparently works from PC to Archimedes, but not the other way round!

Check that the handshake lines are correctly connected.

Are you using a RS232 serial port on modern-ish PC running Windows?

Do you have a FTDI based USB to serial converter? If yes, try using this.
Also ensure the PC is not doing anything else including no use of internet.
