TechSat 2017 in the Netherlands

Postby roland » Sat Nov 26, 2016 3:20 pm

Hi,

Last meeting in Bolton I've spoken with some people about our TechSat meetings in the Netherlands. Some of the *. members in the UK want to visit us and you're very welcome of course. I have three dates in mind for organising this event:

19 - 21 May
9-11 June
30 June - 2 July

You were discussing about crossing the sea by ferry, but for what I have looked at, this is far more expensive than travelling by air plane. I suggest to have the meeting in the Eindhoven area. Alternative airports in the neighbourhood are Maastricht-Aachen (afaik no flights from and to UK), Düsseldorf and Weeze.

People who are willing to attend this meeting please let me know which weekend you prefer (maybe more than one!). This goes also for attendees from the Netherlands and other countries on the continent. Also write down how you are travelling, by plane, boat or car. With that information we can arrange a meeting place and determine the costs of this meeting.

Greetings,
Roland

Hi Roland, FYI we're currently looking at 13/14 May for an ABug in Cambridge so it might be worth looking at the June dates as the May dates would only be a week apart?

We have also some weekends in July if that doesn't clash with the summer holidays. 7-9 July is also an option.
Are you also already thinking about a meeting in August 2017?

I would be very keen (as you know). :D All of the dates suggested so far work for me.

What would be the format of the meeting? Would it be similar to the ABUG meeting? I think the reason we were talking about using the ferry was as a way of getting are kit over to The Netherlands.

The format will be like the ABUG meeting. So bring your kit and show whatever you like to show. I don't think there are many *. people here in the Netherlans who can't get their kit working, so there is not much to repair as at the ABUG meetings. There is plenty of time for discussing and demonstrating new or current projects.

Actually, by the time you take into account in-country travel, the rail-and-sail deal
is competetive with air travel. £50 to the Hoek including rail to anywhere in .nl.

It does get a bit more expensive if you travel overnight as a cabin is mandatory
but it's no more than flying in on the Friday night and paying for an extra night
in hotel.

I should be in .nl for summer holiday so I have free travel and accomodation at end
of July and into August ;)

I didn't see such deals and if that's an option for you then we can also arrange the meeting a bit more to the west side of the country to reduce your travel time.

I'm not sure if anybody's got as far as thinking beyond one for May in Cambridge!

If there's a lot of interest in the Dutch meet from UK members maybe we even make the TechSat event 'replace' the traditional summer Abug? What do syndney, jbnbeeb, sixxdog_uk and the others think?

Seems to me that it is important that we choose a date and venue that is good for all the potential Dutch attendees. It would be rather unfortunate if we all came over and there were only a couple of people there from The Netherlands.

I'm trying to pick a suitable date for our TechSat. If we skip the date in May then we end up with these dates:

9-11 June
30 June - 2 July
7-9 July
14-16 July

I agree with Robert that there should be lots of Dutch *. members otherwise it is not that interesting for UK members to visit us. So please Dutch (but also Belgium and German) members post your preferred dates in this topic before the first of February.

Depending on the locations of the attendees we'll pick a location for meeting.

Hi,

I know I'm known for my not so smart (actually stupid) questions, but,, I presume this time it will be a Acorn meeting, not just Atoms? :?:

Indeed. Many of the Dutch attendees have (and will bring) an Atom but other Acorn computers are also welcome.

I'm asking because at the last ABUG meeting I even saw a Commodore (sorry for swearing at a Acorn page... ) passing by...

Just don't make it the same weekend at SHA2017 otherwise I will be in-country but doing something else!

I note the standard price of rail-and-sail has gone up to £55 :-(

There is also (up to) 50% off from Stena until the end of Jan so it would be good to fix a date and make a booking before then to take advantage of that.

Even though I am not a really active member, I would like to join. All dates work for me for now.

Hi , I'm interested .. but would be dependent on date..if it's at backend of June onwards that'd be preferable for me - but as Lazurusr has said, clearly the date should be arranged per what best fits those more local to the event!

Also can I ask what's the nearest airport for a uk flight..
and is that far away ?
and is it possible to get from the airport to near the venue by train?

Train planner : http://www.ns.nl/en

I shall do the rail&sail unless there a few people who want to share a car over.
Boat doesn't have a luggage limit plus you can stroll around, have a meal and beer
and even set up a Acorn hacker station in the cabin :-)
Also doesn't have hidden airport taxes.

I'm sorry to inform you that there won't be an ABUG-like TechWeekend in the Netherlands this year. The responses that I received indicated that most attendees in the Netherlands only want to join us for a few hours during the morning or the afternoon. So we'll stick to our usual TechSat format. Of course, all UK members are welcome but I doubt if it's worth the costs for just one day.

Seems to be enough disappointment on here to justify one.
