Sound Synthesis / London / Mon 21st Nov 2016

Postby helpful » Wed Nov 16, 2016 4:31 am

The next meeting of the RISC OS User Group Of London will be:

Sound Synthesis - Anthony Bartram, Amcog Games

Monday 21st November 2016, 7:45pm

The Blue-Eyed Maid (upstairs in the restaurant)
173 Borough High Street
London, SE1 1HR

Antony Bartram is currently developing a sound synthesiser for RISCOS, based on Wavebox for Windows.

Although the code is based on the Wavebox DSP, the sound engine is different. Inspiration is drawn from the BBC Micro, Amiga and analogue synthesisers to try and create something distinct and geared towards chip tunes and sound effects.

Each of the 8 sound channels has the following signal path:
- Digital Oscillator: PWM / Saw / Triangle / Noise / Audio Sample.
- With Waveforms optionally combinable via an AND operator.
- With adjacent channels optionally combinable via an XOR operator.
- Attack Sustain Release Envelope.
- Attach Decay Sustain Release Envelope.
- 2 pole resonant low-pass filter.
- Effects: Chorus, Delay (i.e. echo), Distortion (i.e. overdrive) and Warm (a custom effect from Wavebox).

Since Anthony's previous visit 18 months ago, when he had just released his first game Overlord, he has gone on to release three more games - Xeroid, Legends of Magic, and Mop Tops. Each has featured full soundtracks with new tunes produced by Anthony. There should be plenty of time to talk about these too, and maybe buy a copy if you missed them at the London Show!

ROUGOL meetings are held on the third Monday of every month and are free to attend, so drop in for food, drink and a chat. More details on the website:

As if the sound synthesis stuff were not enough, Anthony has said he will also be talking about the 3D modelling used in his space game, Xeroid, and explaining how the 3D projection works. All in glorious BBC BASIC!

That's even more reasons to pop along to ROUGOL tomorrow :-)
