@jbnbeeb

Thanks for that. I haven't signed up yet, partly because I'm hedging my bets against some reason why I might not be released by the missus, and also in case two "full people" need the places. However I am still lurking tentatively!

I like the bit about the charge remaining in the capacitors for many minutes. Last week (or was it the week before :-k ) in answer to a question, I posted on another forum on how to test an unregulated power supply.

With a modern digital multimeter as the only "load", the unregulated power supply I used to demonstrate how to test maintained a very heathy charge for over two hours. I got bored then... The next day I checked again (about 16 hours later). Finally the voltage had dropped from 16V down to about 2V.

Reminds me of the "trick" that us students did in college - charge up one or more of the spare electrolytic capacitors, then put them back in the spares drawer ready for someone to discover

Yup :D (I had to give up wearing it though, it was too darn hot with all the cosmic rays it was absorbing).

There were still 5 spaces left, so I've signed up :-)

Flibble has promised to bring along an extra soldering iron and to train me on how to use it!

If anyone needs handicapping, they can borrow one of mine!
Its probably a bit on the cheap side, but I'll bring my (borrowed) frequency meter in case there are any speech chips to tune! Maybe someone with proper equipment could even calibrate it ;)

OK, there's still space so I've signed up myself and my soldering iron-holding assistant (Robert). He's very keen and actually quite good at soldering so I'm hoping he will be useful.

I can bring:

Son
Oscilloscope
Meter
Soldering iron
Screwdrivers and other tools
Solder, etc

Greetings from TNMOC :-)

I came down a day early in my volunteer capacity to help setup the room / help organise and setup / lug any last minute bits and bobs about

For anyone who hasn't already left home some IMPORTANT INFORMATION for anyone involved in "THE BIG BEEB FIX-UP" Event tomorrow

With many thanks to Gar2293 (Gary) I've now able to show a beta of my Atom and Econet stuff

Apologies for the delay getting all of this stuff together - it was quite the task: writing all the login stuff, sorting the VMs (virtual machines) and buying up a load of domain names but it's demonstrable now

With the kind permission of Alan Macfarlane I've put together a quick clip which highlights the Econet's historical significance - well worth the 4 minutes it takes to watch :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBxGy4xH9PA

At it's height, BBC Micro's were in 85% of schools in the U.K. and there were over 10,000 Econet systems to go with them

You have to admire Hermann's reply when Bill Gates visited trying to sell them MS-DOS and Hermann told them "We [Acorn] couldn't possibly take such a 'retrograde' step"

Not to mention that Bill Gates didn't even know what a network was!

In the video Hermann explained to Bill Gates that by typing:

*IAM JONNY

you could use a remote disk drive [and printer] as though it was attached to the machine you were using

To that end, my modern version of the interface and proposed complimentary, web-based emulation system for retro classrooms works thusly:

Open up a web browser and in the address bar, simply type in:

ECONET.NETWORK?IAM JONNY

or even

ECONET.NETWORK?*IAM JONNY

That's it - it will be that simple. There is no password for *this* login yet - it just shows the normal operation of the Econet gateway.

I have, however, set up an account for us ABUG people on the system. Again, in the browser address bar, type:

ECONET.NETWORK?IAM ABUG,ERR0R94! (Note digit zero not capital letter O)

And you will notice that in the Acorn Atom screen the fields are now filled out correctly. You can type in the address using lower case if it offends your eyes!

If this doesn't works it probably means you are using Internet Explorer which has it's own, "special", way of doing things and you may have to type:

ECONET.NETWORK/?IAM ABUG,ERR0R94!

instead, or even:

//ECONET.NETWORK/?IAM ABUG,ERR0R94!

depending on how stubborn it is feeling about you using its "Bing" service - doh!

After a short delay an Atom Fileserver Econet network "Message of The Day" (MOTD) appears. This demonstrates one link between the old and new as it takes the text live from the technology section of the BBC News website / RSS feed

At the Atom prompt type:

OLD

and then

RUN

hitting return/enter after each command. I am not responsible for any time you waste or any productivity your company looses while you are playing snake! :P

If you type in a mistake (deliberate or otherwise) and have browser popups enabled you will not only get an error number but also it's entry in the manual to help :-)

You may also like the following

econet.network?*iam jonny,No5Alive!
econet.network/manuals/
econet.network/manuals/atom/
econet.network/maintenance/bbc/

The last link are links to html and Word .doc file guides to brightening up "Yellowed" BBCs or other equipment

I am happy to explain further tomorrow :-)

Here is a boiled down list of the BBC Micro's I sorted at Bilton Road warehouse for tomorrow's event:

There's 6 or so "Pretty" beebs on the desk - others need to be chosen from the arranged piles

If possible, please make sure that the BBCs / motherboards include those which HAVE AN ECONET upgrade

This will mean that the socket marked ECONET has a five pin DIN plug :-)

There are 11 of these Econet beebs

It might be useful to check if the Masters also have 5 pin DIN plugs

There are 18 masters that could compliment the Econet network

IMPORTANT NOTE:
We do not need the econet to be working as the BBC will work without the network, i.e. stand-alone - we just need the upgrade to be present IF POSSIBLE

If you're travelling by car and have your own portable flat screen with suitable adaptor cables that would probably be useful though we do have a limited number to share

Also anyone with any econet bits and bobs I can look at ... terminators, boxes, clocks, etc.

Hopefully (if / when another event is organised) Jason (Flynn), Dave (Hoglet), Ian (S), Gary (F) and Prime (or anyone with econet experience :-) might be able to help and/or play with Jason's mysterious sounding Econet->USB snooping device so that I can finally properly implement the Cloud storage and printing for the real Atom and Beeb hardware

Enjoy!

Phil

Hi,
I am abroad at the minute, but if anyone could take some pictures of the museum's issue 1 beeb while they are there, that would be great :D

OK - I'll bring clock, two socket boxes, terminators, some connecting leads - do you want me to bring my A3020 which has a level 4 server on it? Will also bring a flatscreen TV that can serve as a monitor for the arc and also double as a beeb display.

You'd think with all the tech in a modern car they would have thought of a solution to this one, like dimming the lights after X amount of time if the car is not moving and the engine is off, or switching to side lights or something.

At least the Golf bings at you if you open the door with the lights still on and the key out of the ignition :)
