RISC OS (+ABug!) London Show / Sat 24th Oct 2015

Postby helpful » Wed Aug 26, 2015 5:36 pm

This year's RISC OS London Show, with added ABug meetup, is taking place on Saturday 24th October, at its usual venue of the St Giles Hotel, Feltham, TW14 9AD. Entrance is £5 with under 16s free, open 11am-5pm.

http://www.riscoslondonshow.co.uk/

The initial list of exhibitors is already up on the website, and it's already quite long and we are starting to worry about how to fit it all in!

Jon Abbott of the Archimedes Software Preservation Project, along with Tricky and Zarchos I think, will be putting on a retro games arcade using original machines and emulation on the Raspberry Pi.

jbnbeeb is organising the StarDot stands so will no doubt be along to fill you in on what will be on show there!

Hope to meet lots of you there :-)

Bryan.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to come to the show.
The renovation works in my new house and the one I'm going to sell are not completed yet, I don't have much money to spend, and well that's all very well I say I've got some very fast sprites plotting routines but now it's time to complete writing the code to actually demonstrate my statements ...
Fortunately I resumed programming (mainly debugging) this week and I think I'm not far from having the final algos implemented, at least for 256 colour screen modes.
It's not difficult but it takes some time as, exactly as Conrad Hughes explained for Scorpius, I too have more than 16 000 ARM instructions in my routines to, I hope, produce the fastest plotting routines the Archie can have.
Nobody answered the question I asked there :
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=8103
so anyway I'm going to tell you the answer is 9, and I think it's very good
(Please note the shape is complex with lots of 'holes').

And to top it off ('cerise sur le gâteau' ah ah) the routines can plot sprites on a screen whose scanlines are hardwarely distorted thanks to Steve3000's RasterMan (ie the routines can plot an undistorted sprite even though the whole screen is distorted on each scanline using video DMA and VIDC).

Hi,

Long overdue post from myself to list Stardot Peeps who will be attending as [enthusiast] exhibitors..

I PMed a number of people a while back; those who confirmed attendance were...

CONFIRMED

flaxcottage [John] - Stardot - Education software/Robot arm/Rasbperry Pi BASIC (?) - lemme know if I've got this wrong John!
sydney [Simon] - ABUG stand; promoting ABUG events alongside Hi-score competitions (?)
jbnbeeb [Jason] - Retro Software, demoing BBC and Electron games from retrosoftware.co.uk
Tricky [Richard] - will be teaming up with Jon Abbott for the retro arcade. Tricky's latest version of AstroBlaster will be a must-see (and hear) as it now features oodles of speech (as per the arcade original), utilising the Speech chip.

TENTATIVE

Arcadian [Dave] - Retro Software

There's probably room for one more Stardot exhibitor, so post here or PM me if you'd like to have a table.

Yes, you have it right for me.

I also hope to bring my L4 fileserver. So I shall have a networked Master running examples of the educational archive and also a retro-Pi running RISCOS and samples of the educational archive that I have ported across. I have also been working on some control routines from RISCOS to work various displays and USB devices such as the robot arm and an I/O board from Maplin designated K8055.

Should be quite busy.

Only two weeks to go!

As you may have seen mentioned elsewhere on the forum, amongst the interesting hardware on display we will have a Prisma3 broadcast graphics system and a CLEF synthesiser.

There will also be a BBC Micro (+Raspberry Pi) sending live tweets from the show courtesy of TwitBeeb :-)

There's a nice preview article on the RISCOSitory site - http://www.riscository.com/2015/london- ... ggest-yet/

I've been catching up on my beeb fixing and now have ten at full strength, three a bit poorly and two still to look at, plus the master, also unchecked.
I'm not sure how many are required for the ROGUL 8-bit arcade, but I'll be there and so will some of my beebs :)

Hi,
Firstly wow and =D> =D> =D> Tricky for your ever expanding collection of Beebs !

and then just a quick note to say...

**If you'd like to exhibit anything Beeb related but not yet registered interest here.. **
...please post or PM me! We have a couple of tables available, each of which could host a couple of machines.

Unfortunately Sydney won't be able to make it; normally; he usually hosts high score competitions . If you would like to stand in and host a high score competition for some classic Beeb games, let me know!

Should there be no takers, subject to the available capacity of Tricky's car, I think we'll be able to fill spare tables with Beebs (! ) and I'll do my best to host them (also roping in other half too, who appears to have gained an interest in retro computing since Fix a Beeb day at TNMOC) :)

Unconfirmed, but it looks like the misses and Imogen will be there, so that maybe a co-host and competitor for the high-score competition.
I only have one pair of joysticks and a couple of homemade paddles and may be short on RGB SCART capable portable TV's, depending on what other people can bring, so please let Jason know if you have spares.

Although, I am a newcomer here, I really would like to do whatever I can to help. I have noticed some comments on another thread, that there are a few who put an awful lot of time and effort into this forum; but many more who gain from it. I am certainly in the latter category, having already received a lot of help in the few days I have been on here. So I really would like to do my bit to help.

Pending any other suggestions, the best I can offer in relation to the issues above, is to bring along my (possibly slightly iffy) Cub monitor for use on the day. Would that be of any assistance?

One minor suggestion: take lots of pictures - we like to see pictures of other stardotters strutting their stuff at events. :D

Hi there! If you think your CUB monitor will last the day - from 10am-4pm (and you don't mind hanging around to collect it! :) ).. I would be very grateful if I could use it for the RetroSoftware or Hi Score table!

Hi,
per Tricky's note above.. as Sydney and Arcadian can't make it to the show, I'd like to still use the tables to demonstrate Retrosoftware games and run High Score competitions.

While I think Tricky can lend me some Beebs (as I don't have enough to fill 5 tables!) .. we may be short on screens.

*REQUEST*
Can anyone attending the show lend/bring any of the following to help me complete the Beeb set ups on the above mentioned tables? This will be a great help for us to put on an entertaining array of Retro gaming !
- portable flat panel SCART TV (and RGB ->SCART cable for Beeb/Elk?)
- analogue Beeb joystick/s

One of the simplest things everyone can do to help is COME TO THE SHOW! Without people through the door these events wither and die. So come along and join in the fun and we can make this the biggest and best show for years :-)

Of course, the same applies to user group meetings. Find your nearest one and go along, maybe volunteer to give a demo of any unusual hardware/software you've been playing with, get involved! (it is complete coincidence that I'm mentioning this when the next ROUGOL meeting is on Monday and we don't have a speaker :-) )

I made up some more BBC RGB to SCART cables with audio last night, so now have 14.I haven't tested the new ones and don't know what an elk needs. The audio doesn't need to be connected, but if you have an ear phone socket near the rgb socket, like my beebs you can.
If I see another cheap TV in a charity shop this weekend, I may get it, but have less room in my office than in my car!

Elk is the same as the beeb for RGB-SCART.

Excellent, they are 320 for rgb and sync, 75 for rgb and sync and 10k ohm for audio with L shorted to R.

Tell me I'm mad, but with all the internet related stuff for acorns around at the moment, should someone organise a twitch stream of the high-score challenge or arcade?

Edit http://www.twitch.tv/ I'm not volunteering!

Or maybe to decode what will appear to be a cryptic message to those that are not hardware hackers :?:

I know what you are saying, but...

Do keep up the good work, you now have more working Beebs and working 15kHz displays than me by a significant margin

Well the show is open 11am to 5pm and the rugby doesn't kick off until 4pm, so if you arrive at the show early and leave after 4pm then you should miss the traffic :-)

Another reason to get there early (and why wouldn't you?) - a free copy of Hack Circus magazine with every ticket, until we run out!
