Data Harvest 'Contact Controller Plus', Software & Documentation Required

Postby Seldon2k » Tue Aug 22, 2017 12:38 am

I have just acquired a Data Harvest Education, Contact Controller Plus interface, Product No. 6293.
I believe that is from 1988 and intended to work with the BBC Micro.
It was aimed at the educational market and therefore the acorn products of this era.

The external PSU is product No. 6267 and is 7.5v DC at 2 Amps. It connects to the unit via a 5pin 180' DIN plug.
The unit has a 9pin DB9F connector, (Serial?), and a 20pin IDC connector, (User Port?), on the rear.
The top surface has a row of 8 pairs of 4mm sockets as inputs and the same as outputs.
The Input channels each have an amber LED and the outputs each have a red LED.
There are four stereo 3.5mm jack sockets labelled sensors, I believe these carry Gnd, Supply and the sensor line.
There are four pairs of 4mm sockets labelled A1/A2 to D1/D2, these are to control DC motors. They have amber LEDs.
Finally, there is a pair of 4mm sockets carrying a DC supply, this has a red LED.

I wonder if anyone has any documentation or software for this ancient interface box.
The website has no support for something this old and extensive searches have drawn a blank.

I apologise for the grainy pictures, I couldn't wait till daylight.

The small white label reads 4/5/89 I think, I am sure it cannot be 4/5/99.
UPDATE: I have just checked the date codes on the TTL logic chips and they range from 1996-1998 so the label reads 04/05/1999.
This device was to be used with a PC. #-o

I now need to know the original, or compatible, PC Software for this device, and of course any documentation or information on what the 20pin IDC connector on its rear is for. It is connected to a 74HC373 latch so my guess is a printer port.
There is a 7660 DC-DC converter adjacent to the DB9F but no level converter IC?

No replies in a week, that must mean that I have the only one of these in existence. 8)

Update
I finally measured the voltages on the DB9F connector and saw -4v.
I then used an Oscilloscope and saw serial data at power on.
I then connected it to a PC and used PuTTY to interrogate it at 9600 Baud, n, 8, 1, no handshaking.

I then recorded the results of this interrogation in the following spreadsheet.
This may be of use if I have to write my own software to control this device.

As a further step, I read the EPROM and found that although the device had been manufactured in 1999,
the firmware was written on the 7th of June 1994. Although the ROM was 16kB it only contained 1kB of 80C31 code.
Also the Contact Controller Plus was then called the Contact Controller ver B.

Oh dear! I have now found two PC applications for this hardware. #-o
They are aimed at the education market, the first is called 'Go Control' and the second 'Flowol'
They also support the Deltronics Interface I saw mentioned here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5114&hilit=deltronics
From this, I now have the BBC software aimed at the Deltronics interface, one of which is called 'Contact' :D

Pretty sure that this was the serial port PC version which was significantly updated from the user/parallel port BBC Micro version so I doubt there's any software for the Beeb for this one.

EDIT: Just read the rest of your posts. It looks like you're coming to the same conclusion.

Paul
