8271FDC & 3.5" drives, DFS1.20+hacks

Postby CMcDougall » Tue Jul 18, 2017 10:04 pm

maybe one for jgharston :?

One of my beebs does not like the original DFS1.20 with 31/2" drives,
so gave the ones a try from JGH site, being: http://mdfs.net/Apps/Filing/
now, the version DNFS302 (v1.21) was blown onto a 16k eprom, some games now work
but, when I save something, the drive makes the noise and steps up while saving,
then, after a hard break, either the disc is corrupt or the saved file is gone :(

it's not the drives, as tried 6 brand 'new' ones different makes, & 3x 8271FDCs

is this known? as when back on the other/s 1770FDC DFS2.26 they save fine & disc not corrupt.

going by the info for DNFS303 (v1.22), it just helps the NFS printers, so prob no change in the FS

I also found this version many moons ago, flip knows where from, so may try too......

The 8271 does not like 3.5" floppy drives. There are mods that can be done to drives and there is a modified DFS available. If you Google it the page comes up.

Best to use a 177x chip and DFS 2.26 with 3.5" drives.

the 3.5 inch disks has not hole :) ti index that is the problem. the 8271 need a hole ! so to mod is to think that there is a pulse from index hole .

I used Acorn DFS 1.20 in an 8271 Model B with 3.5" drive to test Raven Wood. The drive had been modded by Sprow, to try to restore missing index pulses, but I still kept getting the error "Drive fault 10 at 43/C1 at line 2540".

So I replaced DFS 1.20 with jgh's patched DFS 1.21 (DNFS 3.01), and the error went away.

ISTR one of my BBC B's is fitted with a Watford DFS 1.44 and don't remember any issues saving to 3.5" DD disks. Give that a try.

glad I did not waste £24! :D
regarding the 'keyboard' setting on bottom right, the keyboard with this beebB had it, so gave them a go....
so putting switch up to on for 3&4 ..... done nothing apart from different sounds from drive when loading/saving :?

gave that a go cheers Steve, but is actually worse, even with switch 3&4 on/off off/on done no difference,
games do not load, give Drive Fault too :(

So, I would say, as John said, the hacks are utter useless, BUT, when loading ADFS1.30
the 8271FDC does not even look at the rom at all, so least it's not that daft!

IF :-k :?: someone does another DFS1.20 hack (or 0.90) then the best test is this, as a bullet proof test:
put any file 3/4 of the way on the disc, in my case 'MENU'
LOAD"MENU"
*VER.0
beeb hangs here, so if anyone can get round this (on Drive0 80T) then it's a winner,
as DNFS301/2 (1.21/1.22) and my upload at start of thread is [-(

Colin, are the drives PC 3.5" HD ones? When I tested my Beeb B with 3.5" disks, it was a Cumana DD drive. So maybe your particular machine doesn't like HD drives :-k
