A540 - SCSI drive won't run !Boot until after entering and exiting desktop

Postby ajw99uk » Sun Oct 01, 2017 2:40 am

After a day messing with RISCiX across three HDs, I reverted to one. Configured SCSIFSdiscs back to 1, did "opt 4,2" on the drive, set its ID to 0 and disconnected the other two HDs. The one remaining HD has Uniboot31 from riscos.com. It passes SCSIDM diagnostics and verifies OK.

If the machine starts with "noboot", I can enter desktop, press Ctrl-Shift-F12 twice to get back to supervisor and run !Boot.

However, if I configure "boot" (or simply try to catalogue the drive before entering desktop) nothing happens. No LED, no "chatter", nothing - just
RISC OS 16384K
Acorn SCSIFS
Supervisor
*
on screen.

So, what is the desktop-launching process doing that brings the drive to full life? It spins up OK on power-on (needed the "unit attention" jumper set to get that); the LED flickers a dozen times while the desktop splash screen is being displayed.

The host machine is an A540, 25MHz ARM3+FPA10, 16MB RAM, AKA31 SCSI card, Ether1, ColourCard Gold (but ccmonitortype 0 to disable it for RISCiX use).

What happens if you power up to supervisor, then do *dir :4, then try to catalogue the drive?

Can you post the output of *status?

I was thinking along the same line. Try cataloguing the drive from supervisor (with and without *Drive 4), to ensure the correct drive is selected at bootup and is ready?

Thanks both for your thoughts.

Nothing happens, with or without *drive 4 before *.

Status as one would expect for SCSIFS::4 as boot drive:
Filesystem SCSI
SCSIFSDiscs 1
SCSIFSDrive 4

Replying from mobile hence extract rather than full listing.

It's been sitting there while I type this,

*drive 4
*.
_ [flashing underscore]

So not (yet) even a timeout error :(

And still nothing half an hour later ....
Escape does nothing either.

Seems something like desktop SCSIFiler 'bumps' the drive into activity, whereas pre-desktop commands don't.

Guess I have to look for a Fujitsu diagnostic to run on the PC.

It's a long shot, but full cmos reset?

I know riscixfs stores some extra stuff in cmos. Can't think of anything that should interfere, but you never know...

Interesting, it sounds like the drive hasn't competed initialisation? Does *devices at the supervisor prompt correctly list the attached scsi drive?

*devices looks fine, as does scsidm probe.

Moved the drive to my A5000 to try RISCiX there, which works. Seeing same symptoms pre-desktop, after several power-on-delete cycles (while trying to get video back!).

Running scsidm from a floppy, with probe, device and diagnose commands, also gives the disc the necessary kick, so I think it is something around incomplete initialisation. Hmmm.
