Search the forum for "atm2wav" (written by Charlie Robson)

An .atm file is the format many of the Atom Emulators use.

atmtowav will convert this back to a .wav file that can be "played" into the cassette input.

Choose a game and I'll make you a .wav file.

Long term, buy an AtoMMC from Charlie!

Hi John,
John Ferguson wrote:I am wondering whether it is possible to get some games for my Atom.

The easiest way is to connect your PC, laptop, mobile phone, etc with the cassetteport SK2 of the Atom and play a recorded WAV file.
Pin 2 SK2 = GND and pin 3 SK2 is sound in.

Then find some WAV files on the internet or use Charlie's program.

You mentioned that you were interested in getting an AtoMMC. The AtoMMC comes with an SD card containing many games (or at least mine did).

Good to see that your Atom is alive =D>

As a newbie, you can receive PMs but cannot reply to, or send any PMs.

Interact some more by posting, or contact an administrator and ask. Also pop over here and have a read.

If you are interested in a AtoMMC, you will need to contact Charlie (sirmorris).

List your Acorn machine vitals (including Acorn expansions) here :D

Hi Dave

Thank you for the archive of games.

I would like to have the games I knew as space invaders and pacman.

Could you tell me how to convert games in the archive to the wav format and how to get them played on a PC for transfer to a tape cassette?

I assume that once you have the wav format files on a cassette they can be loaded onto an Atom.

Sorry John, I attached the wrong file above. I've now re-attached the catalogue spreadsheet.

The latest Atom Software Archive can be found here:
https://github.com/hoglet67/AtomSoftwar ... e/releases

Here's a link to .wav files of Invaders and Snapper:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/bc3pewm4urdtz ... s.zip?dl=0

These were generated by running the files from the archive through ATM2WAV posted above. I've tested INVADBB on my own Atom and it loaded fine from my laptop (volume was set to ~15%, but your mileage may vary).

Start by doing a *CAT and see if your atom registers anything when you play back the wav file:
IMG_1120.JPG

Then, if that's good, try:

Code: Select all

> LOAD "INVADBB"
> RUN

Be prepared to wait 5 minutes for loading. Unlike the Beeb, there is no visual feedback.

Dave

If you use a laptop to load and save games etc. does it matter if the ground connections for the microphone and earphone connections on the laptop are joined together?

Actually, my cable only allows for loading.

But in general it should be fine to connect the two grounds together. If you check with a multi-meter, they are probably already connected inside the laptop.

John

In all modern equipment, the microphone and earphone connections will use the same internal 0V/ground. The Atom uses the same 0V/ground for everything.

If you are making up your own leads, or are modifying an existing lead, use screened audio cable. The audio out from a laptop will be a two channel "stereo" 3.5mm jack socket. Connect the screen to the (outer) sleeve. This is the 0V/ground connection to the Atom. Connect a single wire to either the tip or the ring terminal (that is one of the stereo channels). Leave the other terminal unconnected. If you label the connector, it helps later on (well, it helps me when I have that oh!, which lead is which? moment...).
For the sound input to the laptop, you need to find out or work out if it uses a two channel/stereo jack socket, or a mono jack socket. If it is a two channel/stereo jack socket, use a two channel/stereo jack plug and wire the signal wire from the Atom to both the tip and the ring. Screen goes to the (outer) sleeve.

Many thanks Dave and Mark for the advice about using a PC. to save and load from the Atom.
