Hello from W Yorks

Postby ajw99uk » Sat Sep 30, 2017 6:50 pm

Joined yesterday evening to contribute to the 'RISCiX cloned' thread, as I have an A540 and R140 with working installations (though I've never used iX 'for real').

For current use I have Linux (occasionally Windows for specific apps) and it is interesting to see the differences between that and proprietary Unix (RISCiX and SGI IRIX here). Nice to see the Motif desktop on RISCiX, having got used to it in IRIX, though nicer if I could get more than monochrome!

Sadly RISCOS gets rather fewer outings these days than it used to, though I'm trying to introduce my daughter to it (only !Paint so far ...).

Welcome!

I think it likely that I was the final person to be running RISCiX "for real".

This is konan.nsict.org , a 16MByte A540 with an external enclosure holding 1.1GByte and 1.8GByte SCSI drives:

It was my main server at home for a long, long time. I eventually retired it on December 3rd 2005:

At that point I migrated its filesystem forward to a tiny corner of the hard drive in its Linux-based successor. It's only been used two or three times since. Last time I tried using it, I discovered some PSU caps had blown and I've still not got around to figuring out how to get the PSU apart and solder in replacements. I guess I ought to do that some day. )-8

Welcome, I never did anything 32bit Acorn, but they do look interesting at the Wakefield shows.

Thanks all for the welcome.

I first saw 32bit Acorns when school got an A310 in '87-88, not having used the BBCs much (I did Greek rather than Comp Studies or geology when O levels options came up). Then properly introduced to RISCOS at uni, acquired a s/h A3000 in 1992 and s/h A5000 in 1995/6, I forget exactly, plus plenty of addons like EcoSCSI and a couple of hand-me-down drives, internal IDE, a second drive in the A5000.

I still have the A5000, got lucky on a 'broken' (misconfigured) RiscPC on ebay about ten years ago, swapped SA for a Kinetic with David Ruck, got the A540 and R140 free, spent a few Saturdays helping at TNMoC (before it got that name) whence a copy of RISCiX 1.21.

Bought a Pi in 2012 for RO5 and Raspbian and a Pi2 in 2014 or 15, though that is Linux and RPCemu so far - I should have a go at arculator too.

Just been having a bit of a revamp of the study, so have a box of surplus bits to dispose - nothing to excite people here unless you need a cable for an Arc RGB to Taxan multiscan! Keeping a stock of 'small' HDs and 270MB Syquests, a couple of Iiyama CRTs and 10base2 cables for Arc-era use. Down to one working quadrature mouse, though.
