In from the cold

Postby trev-ham » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:52 pm

Hello to you all,
This is my first post, so please be gentle, I have visited this forum many times in the past and found it very informative and humorous at times. I have recently retired, and find I have more time to devote to my hobbies one of which is 8 bit computers. My first was a ZX81 as I could not afford the price of the Atom I so dearly desired. I have always been an Acorn fan, my first being an Electron (Beeb was still too expensive) shortly followed by the Atom, yes I know a step backwards I here you say, family life then took over for a while.
Acorn announced the A3000 (a fast machine for the time), so I scraped up enough money to buy one, which I still have today, then the A5000 (traded this in for the RISCPC) , RISCPC later upgraded to Strongarm turbo.

I have just pulled out my two Atoms (may be a molecule) from storage for their regular testing before being stored again. One is boxed, in excellent condition and fully populated (12k RAM 4k floating point Rom, VIA etc) which I purchased locally about 20 years or more ago, the other was a more recent purchase from EBAY about 5 years ago. I have amassed over 60 machines mainly of British origin over the last 30 years and maintaining them all is becoming increasingly difficult.

I recently retested my Compukit UK101’s one failed to boot, soon fixed that (bad ROM connections) the problem with these 30+ year old single board computers is the IC sockets become corroded and fatigued, replacing is easy enough but at the risk of track damage when using a solder sucker as the bond between the copper and fibre-glass board weakens with age. The reason I mentioned this is that it rekindled my interest for tinkering and improvements, so I designed and made several add-on's to enhance the machine.

Getting back to the Atom, I read with great interest that other members have designed and made colour boards Rom/Ram boards and SD/MMC interface.
Does anyone know whether these add-on's are still available in either Kit form, ready built, or gerber files/schematics, if so i'm interested.

Have you looked at the hardware list (link in signature) generally it has the developer/s and/or name of last person to make them. Also gives the main link to the project for pcb designs etc.
