Hello from 45 degrees South

Postby domesday-nz » Thu Apr 20, 2017 12:42 pm

Hello friends.

The electrons in this message might be a bit faint - they've had to travel from the lower South Island of New Zealand to reach your screens!

I've joined the forum because many years ago I rescued a BBC Domesday system that was destined for the landfill. It's been moving house with me for over ten years and now that I have a home of my own I would love to set it up and bring it back to life.

Seeing a working Domesday system at a computer trade show in the early eighties had a profound effect on me and helped to steer me into an IT career (and that's why I rescued one when I had a chance). However I know almost nothing about operating or restoring Beebs and I am hoping to tap into your expertise to make sure I don't destroy it!

I look forward to talking with you all and would like to thank you in advance for your help. :-)

Welcome to Stardot, enjoy the forum!

We want pictures!! :D

There is little chance of accidently killing the BBC Master, but if you have not already done so it is a good idea to remove the battery pack that is inside the BBC. The original battery pack is pretty acid-resistant but battery acid can be very agressive.

Changing the capacitors in the integrated BBC power supply before switching on is a good thing to do if you don't want to risk a faul smelling smoke generator, but that really won't kill the computer.

Openup a thread (with pictures!) for the restoration / refurb and the helpful forum members will surely help you with links, encouragement and information!

Welcome, I've seen the guys at the ABUG meet-ups bring one back to life and fix minor faults on others, but it does seem to involve oscilloscopes.
Good luck with the Doomsday, i hope your discs haven't rotted too much.
