New member from Leeds way

Postby nealgs » Mon Feb 01, 2016 11:13 am

Hi All,

New member of the forums, but most definately not new to the Acorn scene :)

Bought my first Acorn, a BBC Model 'B', in early 80's (can't remember year 83-84??) along with dual 51/4" Cumana drives - cost me just over £500 IIRC  , then lusted over the announcement of the Archimedes range and finally bought an A310 which i've since Dec 19th 1987, cost me £1255 pounds IIRC (still have receipts somewhere too) and spent a small fortune on it over the time it was in use (upgraded to ARM3 - 25Mhz, possibly 36MHz version, 4MB RAM - self installed (brown trouser moment that was), SCSI podule and 100MB SCSI drive (cost over £500 if i remember - eek), had HP printer and custom Acorn turbo driver for it, software coming out of ears full Acorn ANSI C etc).

It hasn't seen light of day for over 13 years, and following a house move just over a year ago i unboxed it (still in original packaging with CM8833 Philips monitor, also in original packaging) to power it up, and yep, you guessed - nothing.

I'd stupidly left the battery in, which had corroded affecting the battery box etc.

Anyways, i'm wanting to resurrect it, have loads of stuff on the HD that would like to look at again (demos and partial games i'd been writing with some friends etc) - hoping that stardot members can help with bringing, what must be one of the earliest/first A310's to life again.

I'll fetch it out of the loft and get serial numbers etc for thread here viewtopic.php?f=42&t=4321

Welcome, Gary. :D

Good luck with the restoration. Wasn't that gear expensive BITD! Nowadays one can get a Raspberry Pi for under a fiver but it does not have that retro feel though, does it?

Hi Gary,

Welcome to the forums!

There are a couple of easy fixes for your Arc I think....

1. Getting it to come on check out the Repair/Change History section on this page. I really need to make the cap replacement bit it's own page.

2. Fixing the battery holders

well, i'm not the fastest worker in the world lol - but i finally got round and managed to get the A310 up and running again - woohooo :)

issue was due to c37, which will need replacing and i've repaired the battery holders so the cmos setting are now sorted too :)

This has also enabled me to sort out the SCSI drive which is also fully working to (see attachments)

Morley SCSI podule with 100MB Quantum SCSI drive
4MB Ifel RAM upgrade (iirc)
ARM 3 (25MHz), MEMC1a running, and RISCOS 3.10
4 slot backplane
Phillips 8833 Mk1

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depends on which way you look at it, i'm having to sell it all due to a large bill to sort out the engine in my weekend toy.

Does anyone have an idea on what this is all worth (if anything) - it's all boxed in original boxes etc.

Let me know if interested - i'm based in Leeds as mentioned, so if anyone around this way want to pop and see it all - then give me a shout.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and and have a great New Year.

Acorn Advance
c dev and prog ref manuals
software box - games etc
box of disks - acorn user etc
A310 running - desktop
scsi icon on desktop
