Hi folks!

Postby GuitarPhil » Wed Jan 20, 2016 5:43 pm

Hi y'all :D

My name is Phil and I was once the owner, chief programmer and general dogsbody of Alpine Software which produced a number of titles for the BBC, Electron and Acorn Archimedes.

Among these you may recall ALPS (Adventure Language Programming System) which was first produced as a ROM for the Beeb and later on disk for the Archie. I also released a couple of adventures written with ALPS: Plague Planet and COPS, again both came out on both platforms.

AS the Beeb's star began to fade we switched our efforts solely to the Archimedes range and released the 'Creator' Arcade Games Designer and a game called Cyborg which combined elements of arcade and adventure gaming - yes, you guessed it, Cyborg was written with a combination of Creator and ALPS.

Sadly I don't have any Archimedes hardware now but I believe there is a BBC B and an Acorn Electron knocking about here somewhere.

My interest in Acorn computers was revived recently by one of the members here (sorry don't know his forum name here) when he got in touch to ask if I happened to have any copies of ALPS and I was able to send him a copy of the Beeb version with the ROM and Utilities disk which he kindly converted and sent me back which I then got running using BeebEm on my Windows 10 PC.

He also created disk images of COPS and Plague Planet and I've just been playing the latter for the first time in the nearly 30 years since I wrote it - I couldn't believe how long it had been when I saw the copyright date of 1988 on the loading screen! Suffice to say I think I will need to find my old hint sheets as it's all new to me now LOL

Phil.

Welcome !
I keep my fingers crossed you'll have some stories to tell us about your studio and Acorn ...
Also I haven't read Jon on *. for a few weeks but in case he didn't contact you yet I think he will for his software preservation project.

That would be me. Welcome, Phil!

Ah, I can't take credit for that, I'm afraid! That was most likely the work of the boss man, user Arcadian, creator of StairwayToHell. (I merely linked to the disc images on his site.)

Ooh, please do let me know if you find any hint sheets -- or indeed if you find the Electron version of ALPS! :D

A belated welcome to the forum Phil. I've just discovered your excellent looking adventure, Plague Planet (Cops doesn't look bad as well)
after reading a short article in the October 1988 issue of The Micro User. It says that the graphics and character set were designed by
Keith McAlpine of Gem Electronics and that versions have been written for the BBC Micro, Master and Archimedes.
I've started playing the BBC Micro version (in mode 7) but I'd like to know if the Master version had graphics or was it just the Archimedes version ?
