This could be why auctions on the Archies are going quite high at the moment :

Yes, maybe one of the best videos ever to present the Archies to people who've never heard of these Acorn systems ...
Games oriented but the review is fair, for once.

Do you have a spare £900? Would you like a model A Beeb, unused? If so:

7 days to go and already entering LOL prices territory ...

It could also compete for the 'LOL description' thread, thanks to its

Wow. It's pretty dusty, considering. You'd think for that money it would at least have had a clean. He doesn't even include the rechargeable batteries he's fitted.

Does he ride a 900cc Kawasaki sports bike?

I wonder.
But to be honest, most of the time if you contact the sellers and they give you more infos, you've got some 'insider' infos that other watchers don't have.
For example : for the untested A3000 that sold today for about GBP120 I had the infos I wanted so I didn't bid

Sadly, that nice clean box may not be so nice or clean once the seller has coated the box in parcel tape and myhermes has dragged and dropped it across the country...

"Fully Working - Professionally Restored"? I don't think the flux residue was cleaned in accordance with IPC or any standards. It looks disgusting in the photos. For 2 grand I'd have thought the expense of some IPA and lint free swabs could have been afforded.

Sounds like quite a few components replaced. Could it be considered original any more?

It's been badly restored. What a mess!

  • Black (non standard) patch wires and horrible blobby solder on the (badly melted) ribbon cable.
  • The power wire on the bodged up flying socket is not soldered properly.
  • Missing tracks on the display PCB, badly soldered.
  • Display lens melted around the "repaired" ribbon connector.
  • Keyboard bezel missing two of the plastic bolts.
  • IC7 (presumably a ROM) missing.
  • "ADR. SEL." device missing, presumably.
  • Voltage regulator pads missing on top side of the CPU board (should be proper vias).
  • Lifted tracks where the keyboard ribbon / patch cables attach to the CPU board.
  • General filthiness, especially left over flux.
..and that's just a cursory glance. Can we even call it "restored" if it's not working?

Mutant Caterpillar who supposedly "restored" this can be found here: http://www.mutant-caterpillar.co.uk/ and they advertise a repair service. Based on the state of this machine, I'd steer well clear if I were you!

Just to play devil's advocate:
These were sold as kits, so lots of the "awful" could well be the original construction...
