mdfs.net offline

Postby jgharston » Fri Dec 29, 2017 10:07 am

mdfs.net is currently offline as the domain expired today, and typically I never received any email warning me.

I'm currently trying to renew it, but I'm going round in circles trying to actually find who exactly is my domain registrar. WhoIs tells me TuCows and EasySpace, EasySpace tells me I've not paid anything since 2006 suggesting I moved from them to somebody else, TuCows says I'm registered with diyhost which is an old name for EasySpace. Trying to transfer my domain into EasySpace tells me the domain is flagged as "transfer prohibited".

So, I have no email and all mdfs.net sites are unavailable until I sort this.

Update: I've put a support ticket in, but as it's the new year holiday weekend, nothing is likely to be done before Tuesday. I phoned and spoke to the helpdesk and there's only minimal support this week, but the nice lady flagged it as urgent.

Oo, ta.

Yes, I found an email from 2012 with logon details for just-the-name, but the site doesn't exist, and digging away reveals they went out of business last year. I don't remember ever using them, but I think thay may have been around the time I bought increased server space so it might have been related to that. JTN was a subsidiary of PlusNet, so that's just another thing PlusNet have done to pull my internet presence out from under my feet.

In case anyone needs access to this valuable resource in the meantime (I've been referring to it quite a bit recently as I get to grips with BBC programming), Archive.Org has a recent snapshot at https://web.archive.org/web/20171128163107/http://mdfs.net/ (28th November 2017).

I haven't tried all the pages, but a few randomly clicked links worked.

According to the whois data the domain is with Tucows because it expired but was registered via https://www.easy-internet.co.uk

You may want to consider getting a secondary genuinely UK based (i.e. registered with Nominet) domain name. It's much easier to sort out stuff like this as in addition to having an account with your chosen provider, you can create an account directly with Nominet and deal with them direct for certain issues.

Woo hoo!

Code: Select all

Domain Name: MDFS.NET
Updated Date: 2018-01-02T10:52:44Z
Creation Date: 2000-12-28T11:04:09Z
Registrar Registration Expiration Date: 2022-12-28T11:04:09Z

Now, just have to wait for it to propagate, and the sites will be back up and my email will work.

Ages ago I had been pondering an emergency backup domain, but never investigated it in much detail, and was wary of search engines having duplicate entries for everything.

That shouldn't be an issue really. Certainly with Google it figures out that they're both the same site and you can tell it which domain is the primary one that you'd like it to use in search results.

Oh, and the site is back up and working at my end :)

Woo! (Though the repair hasn't propagated to me yet.)

One of the nice things about modern diary systems is that you can set an event in 2021 and ask it to remind you about it a fortnight in advance. I don't have to rely on my registrar to tell me about renewal time!

Works here also \:D/

There are also companies that do automatic renew so the domain cannot expire. But I have already discussed this with Jonathan in a pm.

My webspace people bill me for the domain name renewal every 2 years, so it must be automatic. Hope nothing like this ever happens to me.

Glad MDFS is back!!

I am always truly baffled by the number of businesses who make it extra difficult for you to give them your money.
