Didn't think anyone was still doing patching like this (takes me back to defeating simple protection schemes on the BBC B with a few NOPs in place of a JMP or whatever.)
It appears that there was a problem with the Equation Editor, and someone patched the binary because the source was unavailable. There wasn't much room so they were clever enough to fix the problem within the space available.
In the days of multi-core tremendously fast computers where everything is made easier for the programmer, this definitely feels old skool.
