Best game graphics

Postby pixelblip » Sat Sep 09, 2017 7:31 am

Hi
I was thinking this morning, the spectrum has really had a re-birth in terms of new games and the great graphics....e.g

http://www.vintageisthenewold.com/harbi ... fantastic/

Can anyone name any games new BBC recently they have seen which look light years ahead.......

One graphic game that I really thought was strong back in the day on the BBC Micro was Nevryon by the 4th Dimension.

How they did that ........amazing.......

I've not really kept up with the beeb game scene too much but I bet them are some new good shooters e.t.c

Thanks

The graphics in Mountain Panic are very good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT1dBmnUN0Q

The mode 1 graphics in tricky's conversions are really good (and the games push the machine with lots happening on screen).

Also, John Blythe has done some superb graphics for various WiP games.

If I can find the time, I'd love to do something that uses VideoNuLA to up the ante (here's my latest demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI0VlL7DEdk). Maybe I'll get around to working on BeebJack again :D

Thanks Rob. That is a nice looking game indeed.

Going back thinking about it Exile was also a looker............and Firetrak.........I liked that pseudo 3d effect in Firetrak with the shadows.......some Mode 2 suggestions are always welcome as some of you might realise I got a bit of a thing for colour and Mode 2. :)

The Darkness of Raven Wood and Sarah's White Light, but if you include demos: RichTWs BoneMuncher and Richtech2, RobC's NuLA and the Bitshifters demos.

I like to think that my games make their graphics look their best, but I think only Frogger really looks new for the beeb, but even then, it is only really when you see them in motion (preferably on a CRT) that they actually look their best.

I think game graphics can be simple yet still incredible, like my afore-mentioned 3D Bomb Alley, or the sharp graphics in Frak!. Pole Position is a version I prefer over the graphics of the Atari 2600 and even C64 one. (PP is one example where the better machine for games lacked the slickest version, in game mechanics too.)

That does look outstanding for the BBC. Great for a computer with no sprites and a task to redraw the entire screen with each frame. The sort of thing a hefty job for the Spectrum too, but sometimes possible.

It's also in the Turbo MMC package and it supports joysticks. A MAJOR waste if it didn't. Using an adapter, it's marvellous with the Master System controller, albeit a tad sluggish. But not badly made, by any whisker.

Incidentally, this video has nothing to do with Nevyron but Youtube linked me off to this. Life After People is still interesting to see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSF-A0IPLCc
