Clogger Maps

I found the Electron version of Clogger to be surprisingly good and closer to the BBC version than I'd expected. So I wrote a tool to display maps for the different levels. You can find it at Bitbucket.

The way Clogger stores sprites is quite like Repton. I wonder if Gordon Key had looked at how Repton was done before writing his own game.

This is brilliant... but I wish you'd just post the screenshots of the maps instead. :P Python is a lot to mess around with for someone who just wants a few little images. ;/

I'd like to have a play with this but I have zero idea how to install Python. Can anyone direct me to a good YouTube video or resource that sets out how I install it to my PC (Windows 7)?

Sorry if this is an idiot question... But I guess I won't be the only person who sees the potential here but might be thwarted by "new" technology. :-)

I think you'll need the Windows x86-64 MSI installer for Python 2.7 (from this page) and the Windows 64 bit installer for PyQt (from this page). If you're on a 32-bit system then you'll need the appropriate installers instead. ;)

I occasionally think that I should do Javascript versions of some of these tools so that they could be used in the browser. I briefly looked at this last year. Can anyone recommend a good, but lightweight, framework for this kind of thing?

I should note that the editor I wrote doesn't include support for placing the puzzle tiles or even for saving new levels, so it isn't all that useful. Still, it was only thrown together in an evening. :)

Is there any possibility you might add the option to save maps, etc?

I read through your notes and, seeing as you've catalogued exactly which bytes control what, I could probably have a go at making an editor for it (much as I did for Chuckie Egg 2009 back in um 2009). Then we could create "Clogger 2: The Revenge". :-) :-)

Dave_E, it doesn't look too hard to write the data back to files in the UEF file. Making the puzzle pieces editable might be a bit more work. I don't remember much about it now - like you, I only have my notes to remind me.

I should really be doing other things, but I couldn't resist making the puzzles themselves modifiable.

I've made it possible to change the passwords for levels 2 to 5 in each set. Now all I need to do is to find out where Clogger stores the information about the location of the puzzle on each level.

The metadata isn't correct, though:

Release: Released as Public Domain software For Download


Even though the licence information appears on the page, it still shouldn't be classified as public domain. "Free Software" or "open source software" would be more descriptive and accurate. Since it is also cross-platform, the "PC (Windows)" compatibility is a bit narrow as well.

But I guess these values are used for want of a richer set of values that describe modern licensing and platform choices.

Yes, I think Every Game Going is still a work in progress. I thought of linking to Acorn Electron World instead, but I think EGG is Dave_E's focus now.

Dave, is it useful to report the things that Paul mentioned or do you need to add support for more fields in the metadata first?

Are there any walkthroughs on any of the popular video sites?

I enjoyed playing the first level when a demo of the game appeared in The Micro User (I believe). I even have the disk still stashed away somewhere.

I don't think I could be bothered to play through the whole thing again, but would gladly and happily watch someone else's efforts.

It looks like SentinelProxima played the first level, but no further than that.

It's up to you to do a walkthrough, Simon! No excuses - you have the maps now! ;)

I've never seen him on here - I have spoken to him on a few occasions (he is one of the two people that has written the walkthroughs for Repton maps used on the Repton Resource Page).
