roms

Postby CMcDougall » Mon May 30, 2005 8:59 am

Do u have Acorn DFS 2.2+, if so, if i remember rightly, do:- *SRLOAD 8000 C000 2000 (rom#). This will bring the rom contents from socket (rom#) into normal memory, going from &2000 to &6000. Then *SAVE name 2000 6000 8000 8000. And this will put on disc/tape.

It might be another srload command, check the *help dfs first (Not got ma beeb on at moment!), or is it srmove or similar. Hope thats cool. :roll:

found it

Postby CMcDougall » Tue May 31, 2005 1:10 pm

Hello again, looked on my emulator on ma PC, its actually *SRWRITE 8000 C000 2000 (ROM#). Or less typing with *SRSAVE name 8000 C000 (rom#).

To get the (rom#) do *ROMS to find the socket its in. To get more info on SRAM, do *HELP SRAM .

Some dont work on emulator/ some BBC Sram boards, due to it tries to write to itself to make sure its a real ROM for copying protection. If u have a Watford sideways ram board like me, it also has a write protect switch for it!

If he's not using an emulator then he'd need SRAM utilities on disk or tape IIRC.

and for your info, the above works on emulator OR actual beeb =D>

no need for SRAM utils/discs, its on the DFS>v2 roms anyways :roll:

It's a shame nothing more ever came of this, quite an ambitious game it seems, would've been great to see it archived and emulated!

seems DaveM asked for it on 27 NOVEMBER 2004.
so must be RARE :x

anyone else have a 'rip' of it??? :?

will PM 'rastilan' thread creator, and see if he managed it [-o<

doubt many people would have bought it in 1991, as had to open machine to put Eprom in, and also needs SWRAM :roll:

No, *SRSAVE to SAVE to disk, *SRLOAD to LOAD from disk, *SRREAD to READ from sideways ROM/RAM, *SRWRITE to [b]WRITE]/b] to sideways ROM/RAM. Why do people find it so difficult to work out what action a verb does?

Look what arrived on Saturday as i was driving down my drive! (3 days for 1st class post! :roll: )
Explorer MEDIA.jpg
pic

got it copied (so much for protection, i got rid!!), after remembering from 4+ yrs ago how i wired my 51/4" beeb drive to a 31/2" PC drive, and to use my eprom programmer to read roms, as i could not be arsed to open my beeb up! Then used OmniFlop to read the copied 31/2" discs into my laptop 8)

:wink:

EDIT: put image on the forum, old link was dead :|

How i got it working on BeebEm4.12

either put the loose 'explorerRom.rom' file in the 'Roms.cfg' file (in MyDocs-BeebEm folder)
OR
File-Load disc0 'explorerRom.ssd' and type *SRLOAD EXPLrom 8000 4 ,wait and press Ctrl-Break, Hardware-Allow SW Ram Write- untick 4 RAM

then....(yes, this took me ages to work out, i nearly gave up!!)
File-Load disc0 'explorerA.ssd'
File-Load disc1 'explorerB.ssd'
Disc options- untick write protect 0 & 1
type *DR.1, LOAD"U.RESET", *DR.0, RUN, wait then Shift-Break, choose Duel drives.

Keys : -
Z =left
X =right
' =up
/ =down
Return =Main Menu
Space =select

General comands1
D =Drop object
P =Pickup
T =Throw object
I =Inventory
O =Monster inventory
M =Display map
L =Look what in room
B =Save and back to *BASIC
K =Kill Self

Use Object comands2
W =Wield weapon
C =Wear armour
V =Remove armour
Y =Wear ring
U =Remove ring
H =Wear earring
J =Remove earring
Q =Wave wand
R =Read scroll
S =Sip potion
G =Gulp potion
E =Eat food
A =Apply object
F =Use fixed in room object

Game control comands3
F3 =Quick /slow
F4 =Sound on/off
F0 =Draw speed
F2 =See room being drawn
F1 =Freeze game

happy gaming from the 'lost section', and who's first to draw a map for the whole thing???!

Thanks for doing this I look foward to playing this game at long last. I remember the adverts for it in Micro User etc, but i'd just switched from the BBC Micro to my nice new A3000 so didn't really take much notice of it.

There was another game released for the BBC in the later years, it was a sideways shoot-em-up, which has a development diary in Micro User, I never bought that either as it was around the same time, does anyone remember that one? was it any good ?(if not i'll check the MU DVDs)

Yeah, it was called Time Slip, and there was a demo version of it floating about on one of the PD or Micro User discs. Never saw the full version though - it was allegedly on a Play it Again Sam compilation, but I don't think it ever actually got released...

Any likelihood of Explorer appearing on bbcmicro.co.uk in the near future, please?

I suspect either cost, and/or a reluctance to buy anything which required me to remove the top of my Model B to insert ROM chips (cf my pretty much unplayed original copy of Dr Who and the Mines of Terror), dissuaded me from acquiring this when it came out. It intrigues me just shy of a quarter of a century on, however.
