Best 16K commercial games ?

Postby AndyF » Wed Nov 01, 2017 1:21 pm

I was thinking about this a few days ago out of curiosity really, although I'm not really sure if the thread should be titled:

"Best 16K" or "Best Model A" , as a 'barebones' A seems quite a rare beast and most will have no doubt had some upgrades, so if we stick to just a memory limit and not think about things that might need the 6522, as IIRC the A's did not have this fitted as standard (I could be wrong)

Anyway are there any decent 16K games around please ? Commercial rather than magazine type-ins though ideally. :)

Thoughts / suggestions are appreciated. :D

I know you like your adventure games...
So the first 4 "Mysterious Adventures" from Brian Howarth fit in 16K.
Golden Baton, Time Machine, Arrow of Death part1 and Arrow of Death part 2.
Model A invaders from IJK obviously :D

I did start with the Model A and mostly enjoyed Invaders from Arcade Action and I.J.K.'s Candyfloss.

There aren't that many Model A only games available. Most are MODE7 only but there are a couple that stand out:
Asteroid Belt - Computer Concepts
Savage Pond - ASP/Bug Byte
- Nigel

BBC Model B, ATPL Sidewise, Acorn Speech, 2xWatford Floppy Drives, AMX Mouse, Viglen case, etc.

No, not as far as I'm aware. If I want to test say Model A or Compact functionality I tend to use B-Em instead for that. It is here > http://b-em.bbcmicro.com/

Space Pirates ( Pirates in Space? ) by Bug-Byte Software was a great game for the Model A.

Solder on a Tube socket. Add a PiTubeDirect. Make yourself a Frankenstein variant of Tube Elite which uses the 8K graphics from the original BBC Micro version. (-8

Having trawled some old magazines (mainly from 1982 and early 1983, as Model A games tend to fade away after this point), and checking the STH Cover scan archive, I have come up with this list:

A&F Software Tower Of Alos

Acornsoft Breakout - Arcade Action
Acornsoft Dodgems - Arcade Action
Acornsoft Draughts
Acornsoft Reversi
Acornsoft Snake - Arcade Action
Acornsoft Space Invaders - Arcade Action

Alligata ABM

BBC Soft Fun Games (Breakout, Dodgems, Flash and Snake)
BBC Soft Games Of Strategy (Galaxy, Gomoku, Masterbrain, Reversi)

Beebug Mindbender
Beebug Moon Lander
Beebug Rat Splat
Beebug Shape Match

Bug-Byte Backgammon
Bug-Byte Savage Pond
Bug-Byte Space Pirates

Cascade Cascade 50 (ALL?) - I am not testing them!

Cases (CSS) Airline
Cases (CSS) Corn Cropper

Computer Concepts Asteroid belt - Cassette front says 32K?
Computer Concepts Fruit Machine
Computer Concepts Reversi

Cosma World Cup Manager

Digital Fantasia Arrow Of Death Part 1
Digital Fantasia Arrow Of Death Part 2
Digital Fantasia Golden Baton, The
Digital Fantasia Time Machine

Futura Software Alien Star Fighter MIA
Futura Software Corridor Of Lasers MIA
Futura Software Missile Launch MIA
Futura Software Robot Chase MIA
Futura Software UFO Invasion MIA
Futura Software Zayon Alert MIA

Golem Games Of Logic And Cunning - *Except “Hexa15”

Graphic Research Minefield

IJK Beetle
IJK Breakout
IJK Candyfloss
IJK Dice
IJK Grand National
IJK Hangman
IJK Kryptogram
IJK Music
IJK Mutant Invaders
IJK Startrek

Level 9 Adventure Quest - A and B versions Available
Level 9 Colossal Adventure - A and B versions Available

Micro Power Adventure
Micro Power Cat And Mouse
Micro Power Chess - A and B versions Available
Micro Power Gomoku
Micro Power Mastermind
Micro Power Munchyman
Micro Power Reversi - A and B versions Available
Micro Power Seek
Micro Power Startrek
Micro Power Zombies

Romik Atom Smasher
Romik Birds Of Prey

Software For All Beebtrek
Software For All Cobra - A and B versions Available
Software For All Invaders
Software For All Roboswamp - A and B versions Available

The interesting ones are:

Level 9: Model A versions of Colossal Adventure and Adventure Quest! - do we have these anywhere?

Micro Power: Apparently offered a Model A and A Model B version of Chess And Reversi. Do we have the Model A versions?

Computer Concepts: I found a magazine advert that stated Asteroid belt was for the Model A, but the STH cover scan archive clearly shows "32K" on the cassette cover???

Software For All: "Cobra And Roboswamp" 2 pack. Again, A and B versions available. Do we have the 'A' version?

Wow, that's quite a list! Let's hope some of those rare Model A games turn up somewhere.

Level 9: Model A versions of Colossal Adventure

Ah, yes. I seem to recall that in order to squeeze the game into a Model A, they had to halve the number of dwarfs.
